UPDATED 12/12- PIC-VERY GRAFIC I had to amputate

ok, now I understand about the light bulb. So we could put a small wattage bulb in there to keep the water from freezing after all. We put a reg. light bulb in the unit that came from the feed store as we found a heat lamp was much too hot when I used it in my brooder. It has a guard around it so hanging down it should work, I hope! We almost went into Springfield yesterday but glad we didn't as they had lots of bad accidents from the ice that hit. Be safe and stay warm.

Just wanted to update on my girl...I noticed that when I unwrapped her feet, two seperate areas were a greenish color. I opeded the skin...and a bunch of bright green puss came out. It was in areas that were burnt but hadn't really blistered for me to pop. It was nasty! The toe tip that is black is slowly coming off as I work with it. It starts to bleed a bit and I stop and put neo. on it. I don't think I will have to amputate as long as it doesn't go to the bone or spread. We shall see....She is a trooper!

Thank you Ozark hen. I was feelin pretty guilty for her ever getting in a postion to get burnt. I think everyone that reads this should go check their coop for places their birds can get into trouble....really think like a chicken

I have learned a lot and what is interesting is that I alway pray to be able to help others, never thinking that, that is what just happened. Hope you don't think I am weird for telling you that!

jmo i would leave the wound open to fresh air not cover it up. the sooner it drys up the better.. keeping it wrapped is just asking for infection to grow ... but in no dr. wound dust is good for bleeding it will clot as soon as ya put it on and stay dry.alot of cattle and horse people use it.

I was really confused on how to treat it. I went with how you would treat a person that was burnt. You want to put a antibiotic ointment cream on and wrap with a breathable wrap. That is what I did. The only bad thing is that there are skin parts that are dead. I was letting it go un-wraped for the first few days, but she kept stepping in her poo. That isn't good for the wounds either. It is a toss what is the best. I talked with the Chicken Dr. Peter Brown and I followed what he would do.

Thank you for your help! It really is just a guess on what is the best option.

I would keep it covered. Try some gauze it's very see thru.
I think I would let the toe fall off by itself.

I would be very concerned about the green areas. Where are they? The worst part was up by the foot pad where the toe joins, that's what you need to be concerned with. All dead tissues produce toxin that can poisen your bird. If her toe has more green than pink, it needs to come off. Does it smell? That's a sure sign of infection/necrotic tissue. She will heal faster without that infection seeping into her blood.

jmo . not asking anyone to follow me on this i am not a dr and dont think i know everything lol.. put the chicken by itself on a wire floor maybe 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch mesh to keep the poo down to a min-. get some injectable antibiotic. .keep the foot as clean and dry as i could. i dont believe in covering a wound unless its just to stop bleeding. if its green it is infection and if its not controled it will spread. i never have liked anibiotic onitment always felt like the wound couldnt breath with it on ..always felt like the sooner it dryed up the faster it would heal.make sure she dosent peck at it .if she dose ya better rig up something to keep her away from it. not ment to be argumentative.this is truly jmo. hope ur bird gets better fast.
