UPDATED 12/12- PIC-VERY GRAFIC I had to amputate

I had asked Dr. Brown about a wire floor to keep poo off the feet and he said that, that would or could lead to bumblefoot with open wounds. Any time you have an open sore on the foot it could let staff in. That was the main reason for the gauze on her feet. It needs to be as clean as possible. If I gave her a shot of antibiotics that might not happen....humm

The green puss didn't smell and are located on the bottom, middle of the toe on two toes. It was under an area of skin that I had not opened yet. I opened it, cleansed it with betadine and then put the neo on it. It was really weird because it looked almost floresent.

I am getting ready to change her bandages. I change them 2 x's a day because she still walks in poo and it is that vet wrap that you can get in different colors and it does breath some.

Bless her little heart and feet, I hope she gets better soon!!!!

would soaking her little feet in epsom salts help draw that infection out and ease any swelling?

You know, I did soak today for 10 minutes in warm water to loosen the skin. I knew I needed to in order to help with the two green areas.

Update-This morning I went to clean feet and when I took off the bandages, two of the black tipped toes were shriveled up. I had to amputate today. I didn't take any pictures...I was having a bad enough time working myself up to cut the tips off. I will tell you how I did it instead.

I got out towels, batadine, cat nail clippers, a sodering tool, q-tips, and blood stop. I soaked everything in alcohol first and let them air dry. I wraped my girl up in a towel with her feet stuck out the end and covered her head so she would be calm. I put babadine on her toe, used the nail clippers to cut and applied batadine again. I dryed it off with a q-tip and took my sodering tool and quickly burnt the bleeding areas until they were coterized. I then add blood stop for any very small bleeding areas.

I let her have a bowl of oatmeal in my bath tub, on towels, while I watched her for a while. No problems at all. I do have one more toe tip that will probably have to come off. I thought I wasn't going to have to amputate until this morning, when it looked shriveled. I hope this will help those of you who have to deal with burns or frost bit.

Kepp my girl in your thoughts as she gets better. We want no infections!!

GREAT JOB! I know how physically and emotionally draining it is to do something like that. I'm so glad it went well and your girl is recovering. It never ceases to amaze me how quickly chickens recover. I have wished on more than one occasion that I was a researcher and found the most amazing healing properties in chickens that would help all us folks... but I digress..... I am really proud of you and now you can take a deep breath and relax. Thanks for being so brave and loving your girl enough to do something so difficult. We are praying for a speedy recovery for her. Be blessed, Suz

I am dealing with a bad head ache and my shoulders are really tence. It stressed me out! I never thought I could do it....and then I did it. It wasn't that bad for her, really. She was a good girl and just let me do what needed to be done. It helped that I covered her face with a wash rag. It seemed to calm her and me too...I didn't have to look in her eyes!!! I wouldn't make a good butcher, that is for sure!
