I'm wondering how a box turtle ended up on a island in the pond unless it a rather large one. Box turtles don't swim. Are you sure you don't have a paint turtle?

WAIT! Box turtles can indeed swim. I was confused too, but i searched it up for more evidence, and there it was. So, maybe thats why they are called turtles and not tortoises?

Well I'll be a monkeys uncle! I never saw a box turtle swim but like you said maybe that's the difference between tortoises and turtles.

If you share a photo my youngest can maybe tell you what type of boxie it is if you are curious.

Eastern Box Turtles are sexually dimorphic as adults, so gender will be very apparent later.

As others have stated, you will need UVA/B lighting. For temps you want it around 86/87 F on the warm side and no lower than 70F on the cool side. All that is assuming that you're not going to choose to brumate your turtle.

There are some great herp groups on FB and forums online. Those would be great places to get inspo for an enclosure.

They can and do occasionally swim, but they are not adept to it and will drown. Better to be safe than sorry and not make the water too deep/hard to exit.

I apologize for missing replies here. Not even sure how I missed them on this one and only thread, as I've been getting replies to other threads. So I apologize. I only found the replies because I wanted to update about this NOT being a Box Turtle.
After lots of reading and comparing pictures, the turtle has been identified as a Cumberland Slider. It's doing well so far and we're enjoying interacting with it. I've been trying to learn as much as possible now that we've identified the type and the specific requirements. I will try to get some pictures soon and post them. We've named it "Tilly" but I'm not sure about the sex, so we'll have to wait and see if the name stands.

Good news! It makes more sense that she's (??) a Slider, not a box turtle. Now you can give her the proper care, or release her where she will do well.
Are they an endangered species?

They're not endangered and I've read they're invasive. I have noticed that we have A LOT of turtles in our pond. I wouldn't be surprised if most are these sliders. As long as snappers don't come around, and these don't bother my ducks, I don't mind. This is all based on my very teeny tiny bit of knowledge that I've been learning over the past week. Here's hoping this new adventure proves to be as enjoyable as the adventure with chickens and ducks, it's definitely educational and I LOVE learning new things.
