(Updated) It's here! She is well! (First egg coming... Is she ok???)

We have black sex-links that were born first part of July. Our first egg is on its way. I noticed it about 7 hrs ago when I went down for a visit.

The problem is she is not real bloody but there is some visible and you can see the egg. Frankly, it looks really big to come out of her. She is a hefty gal but that egg sure looks big for her. I expected something little for the first egg.

Should I do something for her? She seems to be happy go lucky like she does not even notice an egg is there. I just checked on her and she is still at the same state she was 7 hrs ago.

I also noticed the others will occasionally peck at her vent. Should I separate her from the rest? If so, will a cat carrier be good or do I need something bigger? Our dog kennel has been loaned out and I just never went to pick it back up.

I wouldn't treat for prolapse since it sounds like she may be more eggbound from the description.. You can try giving her a warm bath in shallow water.. Just enough to allow her vent to relax.. If the egg is trying to come out too fast for her body to allow, then her vent won't stretch that fast.. Once they lay a few eggs, it's not so much of a problem with bigger eggs (although it can happen).. You can put a towel on the bottom of the tub if you are worried about the egg hitting the tub itself and breaking.. When you take her out, just use the blow dryer on low heat and dry her off really good before putting her back outside..

Thank you for the advice! We soaked her a while in epsom salt water and with just a gentle push from behind the egg it popped out just fine. She looks to be doing fine.

She is clucking at the cat who is meowing at her as the cat stays inside and the chickens out so now we have "Cat meet Chicken" going on!

And I would say it is a size large (compared to what you get in the store). Very nicely formed, beautiful coloring on the outside.

To boot, it is my 29th birthday. Never did I think I would get a birthday egg, let alone the first egg on my birthday!

I took a grade A large egg out of the fridge as we just bought eggs the other day and it is just a hair smaller than them! I am just in shock it is a perfect egg for her first egg! And super excited!
