...when do they normally start to get their saddle or hackle feathers, if they are a roo? I have 3 EE's who are 18 weeks old and so far there are no signs of saddle or hackle feathers. A couple of them have been "diagnosed" on here as pretty possibly roos.

Here are some pictures of the chickens in question. I'm talking about the EE's in these pix. It was hard not to get some of my other pullets in the photos, so just disregard them, I KNOW they are pullets! They are all sex-link and one for-sure Buff Orp!

These are 18 weeks old...The black-headed one is Emma, the black and white one is Abbie and the red-headed one is Maggie.

This one is 13 weeks old I'd love an opinion on but I'm pretty sure it's a pullet...Her name is Louise

At 18 weeks you should be able to tell. Can you post some pics of the ones you are questioning?

I don't know the exact age of my EE's, but I guessed they were born around mid-feb. Beginning of July I finally conceded that Sandra needed a name change. The hackle feathers were obvious. Of course, I am not sure he is an EE. Here he is about a week after I diagnosed him. He is much more roostery now.

I think 'Sandy' is one beautiful "man bird". Have you thought of a new name?? Andy maybe?? Sammy?? Just think of her as a cross dresser. Yeah,,nothing wrong with that!! He's wonderful!!

Well he knows his name and will come to Sandy so I doubt it. I have to give him away eventually so I guess his new owners can rename him. I just hope it isn't stew, nugget, pot pie, dumpling, etc.!
