updated pic of BR, possible roo. take another look?

I am still new, but that is certainly a boyo. I have a 6 week old BR pullet who is much darker, with soft white barring, but definately darker then yours. The roo behavior is a sign too, though I had an awfully bossy BR pullet too.

My EE cockerel would be the order keeper though, and if he happened to lose sight of the girls, he would just about panic. He went to a new home, just because I can't have roosters, but he was definately a marine type lol

i had been reading that BRs' can be sassy birds. i was clinging to that line of thinking for as long as i could, lol. but things have become more apparent now. want to stick it out and see how he matures - if he is overly aggressive he will have to hit the road...or the skillet.

Sassy? Not sure what that means, exactly. The term "bully" is really our own take on their natural behavior. They have a pecking order and to us, things look a bit rough sometimes, but that is normal for chickens.

BRs are friendly, curious, great birds who also happen to be great layers. They are the best all-round breed in my opinion. And yes, you have a cockerel. My main flock rooster is a BR and I also own his brother (who is crippled).

i assure you i am not anthropomorphizing. he is a dominant bird, and was wondering if that was another clue as to what sex the bird is. you all have been very helpful, thank you!

I had 4 chicks until about 4 weeks old, the most dominant out of the group was a barred rock pullet, then my EE cockerel. So it's by no means fool proof lol, but the color is more a giveaway. I know it's a confirmed roo, but what are his feet color? Just curious

(The one thing my cockerel did that the pullet did not do was FREAK out when he lost sight of the girls. Peeping his poor head off, running around trying to locate them.)

looks like a boy to me too, when I ordered my barred rocks last year, I ordered 1 barred rock rooster and one dominique rooster, the dominique turned out to be really aggressive towards the hens, running after them and plucking and eating the feathers! He was werid, but made good fried chicken. the barred rock, rocky his name is, is a wonderful rooster.

here he is front and center. his legs are light orange with grey shading. he is a BR as far as i know, at least that's what it said on the bin i got him out of

good to hear, deb, that your boy is a good husband. hoping that (no new name yet) will turn out to be the same way.

@ morgan - he is actually quite adventurous and strays from the ladies and seems content to be away from the group. he fusses the most when you hold him too.

Sassy would be putting it mildly honestly. Literally I have 2 br's that are already trying to fight. One of them went up to our HUGE goslings and tried to start something. Poor goslings were hiding in the corner as he sat there chest bumping their bums and pecking at them. Mean little buggers at times.

this chick was throwing his legs up and trying to spar with the other birds at one week of age, challenging everybody - bring it! very confident from the get-go. the americauna is the bottom bird, poor girl. he picks on her a lot

she is so skitty and hangs back when it's spaghetti noodle time even. she don't want no trouble!
