Updated Pics Welsummer? 28 Days .. Do you think it is a she?

Quote:
Yes there is truth in the eyeliner and V markings of Welsummers but if there is a chance that it may be a cross, the markings no longer apply. Let me see if I can find a photo of one of my babies at that age for comparison.
The eyeliner on your bird resembles that of an EE and my first inclination was to say EE cross. The eyeliner is too heavy for a Wellie. Also, see how the eyeliner of a Wellie does not go all the way around the eye.
These are not the best photos, they are not very clear, this is a 3.5 week old Welsummer pullet.

please excuse her bald area around her back end. She was born with a weird flap of skin that really never went away and didn't get any feathers. She still has that flap of skin and is still bare right there, she lives her life in the laying flock and is a happy go lucky young lady.

Thanks. As I said, I'm not sure. I guess it is a waiting game. Her feathers are coming in fast and furious. Her chest fluff is closing in with feathers now. No darker colours. Guess I'm calling her a girl now....until she cockadoodledoos.

whew..... thank goodness. We lost our silkie chick to wry neck - just never resolved (survived 24 days). I'd hate to give away this baby because she's a he... I checked the wing tips when we got her as a day old (female double feathers) and was hopeful. Didn't expect a wellie when we got her, but that is awesome.

I'm sorry to say this and I may be wrong, but we will just have to see her upon maturity. I still don't think that she is pure Wellie...the 3rd photo shows her feather pattern very well and to me that is not Wellie. Please keep her progress posted here for us to see.
She is a cutie and I hope you enjoy her alot as she grows up.....sorry about your other chick.

I'm okay is she isn't pure wellie, I had thought ee or ee mix/wellie. Either way I'll be happy as long as it is a pullet. It's a roo that won't do here. She is a beautiful baby and her adopted ee mama loves her regardless. I'm so glad that we had a broody girl now. Hopefully when baby is grown mama will lay some pretty eggs. (8 months old and broody when we got her). My ee/austrlorp lays pretty pink/brown eggs now. It is amazing that such a small girl can lay medium sized eggs. The new RIR and Barred lay these Jumbo eggs, while my other RIR's laid large brown. Is is common for barred rocks to have a lighter middle in their eggs. Almost like a beige stripe. I saw a few others on the breed pages similar.

Something I forgot to ask you...does this baby have a single comb or a pea comb? I can't tell from the pics. If it is an EE cross Wellie and it ends up with a peacomb, she could most likely lay an olive colored egg. If she has a single comb she will probably lay a brown egg.

I only have Barred Rocks and layers and they lay a tan egg, I haven't noticed a lighter middle area. Hope someone who works with this breed comes along to help you out.

Her comb is still really small. My other girls have pea combs I believe (ee's) This one may be a single - however the fur and feather teenager that sold us the babies told me rose comb... so not sure yet. What are the parameters for pea combs?
