Hi Kat I also got the LG 9200, but added a PC fan, and NG tube for water without having to open it. you can pick up a pretty reliable hygrometer at petco in their reptile dept. for 5 bux it is sticky velcro so make sure you place it where you can clearly see it from one of your windows should you get it. I just picked up 8 Silkie, and 4 RIR eggs from Mallary, The more hatches we can get from her Silkies the better chance we'll get hens. There are 2 eggs each from 4 of her hens, they were black and partridge colored. Mallary has a white Silkie a bit older than the 2 we hatched the end of March, she told me if it's a hen I can have it, she doesn't keep her white 1's. The RIR won't hatch til May 17-19th she just collected them today, then they go back to her close to immediately.
that makes 30 fertile eggs in my bator...

My poor tiny Sultan/BT Buff Jap Bantam passed away last night

I know both those breeds have a low mortality rate, but I at least would like to have 2 of them survive.

1 of Goldie's eggs is peeping and pipping it won't be long til it's hatched. If another doesn't hatch before I put the chick in the temp brooder I'm going to bring the youngest Mille Fleur chick in with it so it has a friend with it.
Mom thinks that is the reason the last Sultan/BT Buff Jap Bantam died, it was lonely.
IMO I think crossing the breeds lowers the survival rate on these chicks.
We'll find out if this 1 survives with another chick in with it.

It is day 3 after hatch and the chick is doing fine, it's in with a 2 week old Mille Fleur helping it learn and keeping it company.

Another Sultan/Jap Bantam hatched

a bit ago, I'll be able to put it in the brooder with the 3 day old one tomorrow.
I have a battle keeping these cross breeds alive, but I will keep working with them.
So far the 2nd one is doing fine in with the Mille Fleur chick.
If I would have thought about putting 1 of the younger Mille Fleur in with the 1st cross breed it may have survived.

3rd Sultan/Jap Bantam hatched

between 4am and 7am 05/05/11 and during my (early morning potty break, around 4am) I put it in the brooder with the other 2 Sultan/Jap Bantam crosses.
I woke up around 6am again (next early morning potty break) and low and behold a Black Silkie hatched

just before I went in. If 1 of the black, 1 of the partridge, and 1 white Silkie are hens

I'm keeping them and the rest go back over with Mallary. I can't wait til they get old enough to tell, then next spring I'm going to borrow Cinnabar back or take our hens over to Cinnabar at Mallary's and start collecting eggs from mixing them.

Could you imagine what colors I'd get from mixing a Ginger Red with a Black, a Partridge, and a White Silkie!!!

I know Mallary has holding pens and would let me borrow the space to mate my Silkies and even my Mille Fleur hens can be taken over there to mate with 1 of Mallary's roos. I can't wait

I knew a couple of them (Silkies) would be hatching this week, but them hatching in the early morning hours is surprising.
I also have 4 RIR setting for Mallary, which won't hatch for another week or so. When I take them over to her I'm picking up more of her fertile eggs to help her get them hatched. I'm having fun with this.

I'm up to 5 Sultan Japanese Bantam cross chicks, just put the 1 that hatched yesterday morning in with the other 4 and Black Silkie.

WOW another Black Silkie hatched at 2am, that makes 4 Silkies, 5 Mille Fleur, and 5 Sultan/Japanese Bantam so far.
