Thanks Deb, hehe sorry you were called Nate LOL I must have been sleepy too cuz I thought I was replying to Nate and didn't notice you had posted instead.
Anyway, I'm trying to add more ventilation for them because I know how important that is with chickens especially during the deep cold to humid summer. My double stall 12x16 has a large opening that I never close, it's proximately 7 feet high by 8 feet wide and faces due south, I even took the doors off because I never had to close it even in the coldest weather. there's also a window in that stall that stays cracked open as well on the west wall, another in the adjacent stall faces south, that is also cracked at all times.
The same size window is in the coop/stall too, which I'm redoing with a screen and I will hinge the outside storm to be lifted open when the weather permits. but seeing as how it's on the west side and our winds are always either SW or West or NW winter time. I have to be able to close it up or they will have to turn into ducks or penguins, it would pour or snow right in there. Do you think that will be enough ventilation?
For protection I'm chicken wiring the top of the coop/stall and 1 side is almost all wire except the bottom 4 feet is plywood, this will also give some extra blow through seeing as how I can't leave the bay doors open in the winter. I think summer should be ok to leave the bay doors open, my dog will protect the garage like Fort Knox from any would be predator, and I think the horses would stomp anything thinking about coming in the big stall door. if by chance something did get in that side my dog would be useless , because she is locked out of that side by the stall door. Though I think she would most likely bark her fool head off and wake me. I'll post a few pictures in a little bit so you can see what my description is trying to say... LOL I should have stayed in school. I will check out the rice hulls but I shop our local farm stores ALOT and I have never seen them here. So till I get those pictures up Thank you very much. Kim
Ok heres some pictures I'll try to explain as I load.
This is the coop stall from the north side
Front side faces East
BlackJacks stall southeat corner of the garage, we plywooded the stall so far up so he couldn't chew it up. looks like he ___, but keeps him from eating the garage
Big stall with south facing door, don't mind the patchwork wall Jack chews holes in the OSB guess he thinks it's candy!
Heres the door with the gates closed, but no door
