Updated7,1 2011 How many chickens fit in 10x12 coop/stall?

Thanks Deb, hehe sorry you were called Nate LOL I must have been sleepy too cuz I thought I was replying to Nate and didn't notice you had posted instead.
Anyway, I'm trying to add more ventilation for them because I know how important that is with chickens especially during the deep cold to humid summer. My double stall 12x16 has a large opening that I never close, it's proximately 7 feet high by 8 feet wide and faces due south, I even took the doors off because I never had to close it even in the coldest weather. there's also a window in that stall that stays cracked open as well on the west wall, another in the adjacent stall faces south, that is also cracked at all times.
The same size window is in the coop/stall too, which I'm redoing with a screen and I will hinge the outside storm to be lifted open when the weather permits. but seeing as how it's on the west side and our winds are always either SW or West or NW winter time. I have to be able to close it up or they will have to turn into ducks or penguins, it would pour or snow right in there. Do you think that will be enough ventilation?
For protection I'm chicken wiring the top of the coop/stall and 1 side is almost all wire except the bottom 4 feet is plywood, this will also give some extra blow through seeing as how I can't leave the bay doors open in the winter. I think summer should be ok to leave the bay doors open, my dog will protect the garage like Fort Knox from any would be predator, and I think the horses would stomp anything thinking about coming in the big stall door. if by chance something did get in that side my dog would be useless , because she is locked out of that side by the stall door. Though I think she would most likely bark her fool head off and wake me. I'll post a few pictures in a little bit so you can see what my description is trying to say... LOL I should have stayed in school. I will check out the rice hulls but I shop our local farm stores ALOT and I have never seen them here. So till I get those pictures up Thank you very much. Kim
Ok heres some pictures I'll try to explain as I load.

I use Shavings in my brooder and grow out pens. They last longer that hay or straw and absorb moisture much better. This past winter was terrible here in oklahoma. About 3 feet of snow fell in a week or so along with the lows around -25 highs under 10. Very very cold. Wind was blowing 40+ with drifts 5 ft or more. I am going to insulate a part of my barn in case this happens again. As for ventilation have quite a bit but with little or no drafts. Patandchickens has a Byc page for ventilation check it out!

10x12=120sf

4sf per bird = 30 standard birds

12" roost space per bird means you need 30' of roosts

Could run three across the 10" side of things to get 30' of roost space.

Me myself I'd use 2"x2" lumber with shelf braces to attach.

I'd put the tallest one 6"(at least) away from the wall and 24" up. The second would be 6" forward from the first and at 18" height. The last 6" forward and 12" height. The 6" between keeps the ladies on the lower roost from getting rained on from above, and the 6" or more between the roost and wall prevents icky splat buildup.

Nest boxes you want one for every four hens so with 30 you could do with 8 nests. Either 8 individual ones 14"x14" with 12" door or you can do a long area 14" tall but 112" long with 12" 'door' (want some kind of rim to keep bedding in)... 112" = 9 1/4" so you could run the nests along either side of your coop and have plenty.

Wow that's great info was just fooling around in there wondering where is the best place for roosts and how many am I gonna need , you must have been seeing into my head this after noon. Because I didn't even come back to ask anyone yet hehehe............. I'm hoping to get 20 hens out of all these babies, will re-home any good extra's the rest will go to freezer camp, the roo's anyway. So for winter I hope to have 22 chickens and not 30 LOL, I never planned to have more than 20 but chicken math and the screwed up order made me have a few more than intended.. after next weeks shipment if they all make it I'll be at 42.............. My original plan was to order 30 and hope 15 were hens but my first order had I think 12 hens in it. 10 roo's but I'm too new to sex them with much accuracy yet, but the obvious ones that are crowing already. I plan to keep 1 or 2 roo's if they aren't nasty otherwise they will end up in a pot too........TYVM Kim

Thanks Deb
I haven't been back here to post, I have been working at getting it done, so my babies can get outside and at least enjoy the fresh air until the run is finished.
I have the 3 roosts up they are next to the nest boxes, so they ain't quite 10 feet long, 8 1/2 feet along the 12 foot side. So thats only 25 feet, give or take, so I'll have to wittle down my birds to 25 for winter or add another 5 feet somewhere. I'll get some more pictures when I have it done.
I'm still working on the nest boxes what a pain to use patch work materials to construct something that would have probably taken me a day to frame up and finish, it has already taken me 3 days, because I'm trying to use up all the scrap, around here from horse stalls, and run in sheds, and various other projects. It's very time consuming to putz around this way, wish I had tons of money to just buy whole sheets of plywood and long lengths of lumber, but the way things are going around here I may not be able to wait till next year to sell the house and move somewhere with more land..........everything up here has doubled or tripled in price except our paychecks. So we are barely getting by or mostly behind as the days grow longer so does our dept, we have had to use our credit cards more and more and I'm not liking it at all !!!
So will post pictures later tonight hubby is off the next 2 days so maybe we will finish it so the garden can get planted. If that frost there predicting stays away. ggggggggrrrrr rotten weather, tornado's 1 day frost the next. Kim

WRT nest boxes I have seen those five gallon buckets at Home Depot work quite nicely. laid on their sides with a brick in between to keep them from rolling or fastened to one long board with a screw across the back. Then a poop board done over the top. Some have even taken the lids and cut a D shaped hole in them to act as a barrier to keep the nesting material in.

When you get done more pix please.....
