upright or chest freezer?

I had a hand me down upright, and coming back from a trip and finding the door had been open and seeping that horrendous gunk through the garage... Yikes! Eventually it was rehomed, and this spring got a big chest freezer for a whole steer. I chose the energy star, manual defrost and the only model with lots of sliding baskets. I keep it locked as double insurance the melting never occurs, key hung in the kitchen. The only trouble I've had is enforcing the rule "the freezer is NOT your workbench", since it's in the garage next to the workbench. I thought I'd have trouble keeping track of things in the depths, but since I'm the only one in there it's been ok (knock on wood).

I've got an upright and I love it-definitely easier on the back as other posters have said. I still have an inventory list even though it's an upright and I can find things easily, I just like being able to look at it quickly as I head to the grocery store.

Ohhh yes we have 2 generators here. After the 'cane season here in 2004 and we lost an entire freezer full of meat , can't remember the brands, but one runs the well and freezer, the other runs the house. Never again will I be caught without a generator!

I've now got one of each. I just bought an energy star 13 cu ft from Sears. A chest type as my upright is chock full now. It was under $300 for the new one.

I have -gulp- four freezers and two 'fridges. One big upright freezer and three smaller chest freezers. As everybody said, the upright is easier to get stuff in and out of.. but the chest freezers hold more and are more energy efficient. The upright I have is not frost free so that reminds me.. I have to go defrost it soon. But for long term storage of frozen goods, a non frost-free freezer is the way to go.

I used to have an upright, replaced it with a chest. I prefer the chest. And my men say its easier to hide the fishbait in there, so I don't throw it away.

should I get a gasoline or diesel, if that choice is available? Any other tips for choosing a backup generator?
