I am sorry that we waited so long to create a post on this; we have spent many 10's of hours researching this on our own and scouring these forums trying to sift through the noise and navigating on our own.

Chickens involved so far:
BB – the patient hen
AP – The other hen that just started showing symptoms of being lethargic and unusual poop

The current situation is BB is not drinking water on her own anymore, but still has energy for foraging (I carefully watch her to make sure she is only in the moist dirt away from plants and try to stop her from eating plants and grass ( although occasionally she might grab a small bite of a leaf or grass bit before we stop her ). I am letting her eat the bugs grubs and worms she finds. She currently has a full hard crop, but has had a crop in a waterballoon state and even achieved what seemed like a mostly empty crop a few days ago (~feb4). I will answer the questions and then try to create a history timeline as best as I can recall.

1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)

Blue Australorp hen around 3.5 years old. Her normal weight is about 6 lbs but right now she feels less than 4 lbs right now. We haven’t weighed her but just feels looks like she is getting very light and small.

2) What is the behavior, exactly.

We first noticed that she was lethargic when it was cold, but when it was warm she would get her energy back. For the past 2 weeks she has been not eating on her own and very picky about what she will eat with us offering different favorite foods. More on this in the timeline since this picky eating has evolved. She has been doing some drinking of water on her own and when offered sometimes will drink but currently is very apprehensive to drink from us.

Mar 8th she finally drank some water again, we were walking BB at same time as rest of our flock, and when offering her water(with probiotic electrolyte mix) another chicken ran up and started drinking the water and BB in the herd mentality started drinking it, and continued to drink it after the other chickens left. Chicken psychiatry at play here for sure!

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?

This timeline might go back to roughly February 12th first noticing the lethargy, but I am a bit hazy on exact first noticing timing here. We isolated her to garage with a warming plate to protect her from the extreme cold Feb 19th. I will provide timeline and a lot more details after answering these questions.

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?

Until May 7th:

Not the crop bound or lethargy, though our other hens always have a full crop when we check in middle of day, I need to check them in morning before eating to see if others have same issue. Some hens would occasionally have runny poops and messy but feathers. We have already responded to this by worming the entire flock patient on Feb 23rd and rest on Feb 24th.

Update:
May 7th Other chicken AP starting to look lethargic
May 8th Other chicken AP still lethargic and found poop from AP pictured
1741481252386.png

Note: AP does not have a full crop like BB, and until May 7th was a relatively fat, meaty, and seemingly healthy chicken. At her normal energy levels until then. She is still meaty and fat. (I do not believe she is obese).

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma?

No, she also will jump up to perch on side of her garage cage when we open it before we can get her. She still has balance, and can flap wings, she also will forage on her own(during chaperoned foraging sessions.) She is sensitive about us touching her crop and will want to wiggle stand up during a crop massage. When crop is hard doesn’t mind us touching it.

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.

There is some chicken pecking order drama which is more with the australorps than our orpingtons, but there is a pecking order hierarchy triangle of chickens who pick on each other after we introduced a rescue chicken to the flock about a year ago. BB is the lowest in the pecking order of the australorps which are all below the orpingtons, the rescue chicken is below the BB, but above one of the chickens that will occasionally pick on BB. This exposes BB some amount of stress.

We have changed/rotated foods from (New Country Organics – Soy Free Corn Free Grain) to (Kalmbach 17% layer pellets) but we still give them some of the New Country organics at same time as we phase out due to higher price and also they are selectively eating the new country organics for the part they like. We understand food changes can cause issues for chickens as well.

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.

Up until about Mar 4th drinking water on her own. When we first isolated her Feb 19th, she had little appetite, she was not eating the pellet food at all, but would eat fish, coconut oil bits(only from hand), would pick at chopped up hard-boiled egg and munch on raw egg(when held in container in hand). Next day, no appetite for anything, but will still drink water. Crop switched from hard pingpongball size, to a waterballon. We started letting her forage out of desperation and she would eat clay bits from dirt and whatever small worms/grubs she could find which was a surprisingly decent amount.

Crop felt empty around March 3rd, and we tried offering her all the different food types before but she was not interested. Anything other than foraging for dirt and grubs worms ect. She would eat mixture of fermented chicken food, with some crumble chicken food mixed in. We would sprinkle chickweed leaves in to entice her which would get her to eat the other stuff by accident, but she would occasionally eat the crumble or the soft lentil bits.

March 4th crop hard and full again and not drinking water
March 8th finally drank water again due to seeing other chicken drinking the water.

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.

Poop started out as small and mostly liquid, with some brown bits and either white or yellow stuff in it see pictures of poop in the picture sections. Some poop had yellow areas. After the phase of not eating anything but earthworms while crop was a waterballon, she was pooping really runny with splatter pattern.

We weren’t taking too many pictures of the poop early on because we weren’t that worried about BB at the time. First poop related picture was on Feb 22nd not actual poop but an oddity.

Feb22 found solid lima bean sized clump of hard food material (smelled fishy, but we were feeding her fish the day before) in hospital. I broke it to find it was same material on inside. It was squishy but hard, rubbery till it broke abruptly

9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?

See timeline for better detail on when and what.

Cropbound Pill (21st 24th 28th)
Safeguard (23rd,Mar 5th)
1741481508575.png

Dose – small pea size every 10 day
Monistat (23rd-28th)
1741481523291.png

Dose – ¼ suppository 2x daily
Bactrim (3rd-7th)

1741481537121.png

Various times/attempts often she rather drink the regular water

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?

We intend to treat the bird completely ourselves as we did not intend to spend a fortune on vet bills with our chickens.

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
1741481575522.png

We are using dominion hemp bedding

Feb 21st Cropbound Pill
Feb 22nd Fecal Test
Feb 23rd Dewormer and start Monistat
Feb 24th Cropbound Pill
Feb 28th Cropbound pill(still waterballoon) – Start letting her forage outside
Mar 2nd Last day of Monistat
Mar 3rd Start Bactrim Crop Felt Empty that afternoon
Mar 4th Fed wet Crumbles with Fermented Grain mix she would only eat when sprinkles with fresh chickweed leaves and when thrown on ground around foraging. Also ate some sardine fish bits very small amount.
Mar 5th Dewormer also crop filled with hard food not interested in drinking water anymore
Mar 7th Last day of Backtrim crop still filled with hard food still not drinking
Mar 8th Crop still filled and hard, drank some water during her walk with rest of flock (we carefully make sure no one will get a chance to pick on her, but other chickens drinking her water got her thirsty). Can feel crop less hard and a bit of water can be felt in crop.

Throughout timeline lightly pecked or completely ignored various foods including fish bits, wet crumble, solid coconut oil, raw egg, and hard boiled egg bits. Foods listed as ate were given after attempting the hard boiled egg and wet crumbles with no interest shown.

Food
Kalmbach 17% layer pellets – current feed all chickens

FEB 14th - BB before we began this process
1741481836804.png

We have already responded to this by worming the entire flock patient on Feb 23rd and rest on Feb 24th.

Feb22 found solid lima bean sized clump of hard food material

Safeguard (23rd,Mar 5th)
1741481508575.png

Dose – small pea size every 10 day
The "Lima Bean" you found is lash material, this would indicate Salpingitis. You can try treating with an antibiotic like Amoxicillin or Baytril.
Safeguard is dosed by weight.
To treat Roundworms only, dose is 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally once, then repeated in 10days.

To treat most all worms that poultry can have except for Tapeworm, Safeguard dose is 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally once daily for 5 days in a row.

If she's active and gets along with her flock, I'd leave her with her flock and just pull her aside daily for any treatments you are giving. Often they do better with their flock and will continue to eat/drink.

Very often a crop problem is a symptom of an underlying condition. Reproductive Disorders (Cancer, Salpingitis, EYP, etc.), infection, worms and/or Coccidiosis are few underlying conditions seen with crop problems.

Here's more information about treating crop problems along with what Salpingitis is.

Hi Wyorp Rock,

Thanks for the response and extra details.

I did not think about the "lima bean" being a lash egg or similar related thing. I thought it was just impacted or undigested food, but that makes more sense.

3/9 update:

Morning crop still hard and full

Chicken still has energy and foraging on her own and eager to get "walked"

We gave her the 250mg of fish amoxicillin pill around 1:30pm.

We walked again in afternoon and let her forage for about an hour in topsoil like dirt from decayed wood chips, she was finding lots of insects and earthworms to eat.

During first walk BB drank about 10 mouthfuls of water on her own with other chicken creating herd mentality.

Second walk drank about half as much and took trickery to get her to start drinking at all. I would hold bits of chickweed(favorite treat) below the surface of the water and she would accidentally start drinking when trying to get to it). We only let her eat small pieces of the chickweed to prevent further clogging. She would try a lot to sneak some grass or other green plants and get annoyed when we stop her.

Poop:
The poop found in coop was similar to the mar 8th picture. Outside she pooped two small lima bean sized pure brown mud looking mini poops.

1741565217875.png

Dosage was 125mg/kg 2x daily from what we read

I did a weight today and found BB weighing 1330grams around noon, at the end of the walk weight was 1380grams from water and foraged material.

Comparatively the largest australorp weighed in at 2100g today
And the smallest orpington came in at 2400g the largest orpington at 2850g (this is the "buffest" of orpingtons) she is built like a bodybuilder.

I have 2 questions looming.
1. Since the crop was still full is there going to be a problem with the Amoxicilling not getting into her system? She drank water so I am hoping that can allow the antibiotic to jump the line.

2. Should we immediately start deworming her with the more aggressive dose since we only treated enough to deal with roundworms? She is on the strong antibiotic so we are apprehensive to overmedicate, but at same time her weight is looking dire.

3. Any suggestions regarding AP the chicken who is starting to act lethargic but currently she is eating and drinking water on her own and has plenty of weight?

Thank you so much for your help on this and responses. I believe you helped us with our other chicken who was attacked by the hawk. She was doing great up until 3/7, but unfortunately, now she is the chicken that is starting to act lethargic (AP).

Your dosing for Amoxicillin is correct.

You're providing grit (crushed granite) free choice, correct?

If the crop is impacted, then try treating as such along with it being sour. Check the crop first thing in the morning before she eats/drinks.

Some do treat for worms and give antibiotics at the same time since they are different types of medications, that would be up to you whether to give both at the same time.

For AP, have you dewormed her?

I have not tried this treatment, but several have and it seems to be helpful in clearing a slow crop, it may be worth looking in to.
https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/another-remedy-for-slow-impacted-crop-problems.79871/

Wyorp Rock,

Yes, they have access to grit and also oster shell for calcium.

Yes, but only using the 1 dose every 10 day method, we need to do the whole flock again with the once every day for 5 days. Or use a different 1 dose de-wormer.

Update May 10:
Gave BB 250mg amoxicillin in the morning and convinced her to drink some water during walk.

BB is still acting about the same and more apprehensive about drinking water when being tricked into it, still will drink some with the chickweed trick but less thirsty overall. Worried that the crop is still full and hard.

We gave BB another 250mg amoxicillin and also the crop-bound pill in evening roughly 8 hours later after walk. Made her drink a few sips of water after by holding her and putting water up to beak till she started moving mouth.

Information on the crop-bound pills:
We bought crop-bound pills from the local chicken specialist store, and the dosage was 1 tablet and only give another tablet after waiting 3 days as needed. I believe these are the following product after some investigation since they look the same colors and are the docusate sodium talked about on these forums.
1741662494196.png

We weighed her again today and she started at 1330 grams in morning, and in the evening she weighed 1360 grams meaning she was less interested in eating/drinking this time around.

AP was acting a lot better today, not sure why but maybe it was just a temporary issue. We are keeping a close watch on her. The only things we have given her so far is a Rooster Booster in the community water bucket.

3/11 Update:

Checked in morning and found one of BB poop was in larger quantity and also more brown. Pictures below:

1741749937254.png

Poop during morning walk
1741749918696.png

Gave BB 250mg amoxicillin in the morning around 11:00.

We saw some evidence that she drank some water over the night or morning.

Crop felt a bit smaller this morning (atleast I think so) still hard, but I was massaging the crop and was able to feel this stuff inside deform, but I only made a small divet in the shape.

During the day we gave her 2 extended 45min foraging walks and tricked into drinking water with chickweed again(holding the chickweed under the surface of the water and she drinks water when trying to get it, we let her get it but only in tiny bites). Heard a water moving around or stomach settling sound one time during this process.

Gave BB 250mg amoxicillin in the evening around 7:00

Had her drink some water again. She really not interested in drinking water on her own during observation.

Offered her a bit of hardboiled egg yolk(very powdery), and surprisingly she ate about one lima bean worth, then wasn't interested in it anymore.

Weighed her a few times and fluctuated between 1320gram and 1355gram. Weight moving down, but this could be from the larger poops today.

Is this a sign that the antibiotic is having an affect?

If we find an empty crop again in the morning tomorrow should we only feed liquid foods? or should we continue feeding egg and wet crumble?

Last time her crop emptied we tried to get her to eat food, and possibly made a mistake, offering the fermented feed that was harder than the crumble because she wasn't eating anything else.

Thanks!

Our other chicken(AP) seems to be completely normal, so atleast we arent on double high alert anymore. We will still keep a close eye on her.

Update May 12:
Gave BB 250mg amoxicillin in the morning around 11:30

Gave BB oral dose (1 of 5) of Safe-Guard Fenbendazole cream about a pea size
1741840775081.png

BB took a long 1/2 hr dust bath during the day with our other chickens. Was really getting into it with dirt flying everywhere!

Massaged crop a bit later and noticed I was able to make a divet into the round bulge.

Gave BB 250mg amoxicillin in the evening around 7:00

Massaged crop again and felt the bulge soften it kinda gave in a way where the ball fell apart into watery bag, but after a bit it recombined into a soft ball again. Its hard to tell exactly what is going on and BB gets annoyed after so much crop massaging.

Gave her water by tricking her after each treatment and during foraging walks.

She is eating a nontrivial amount of chickweed while getting her to drink water but this seems better than her not drinking anything at all. The chickweed bits are at least kept to a minimal size.

Also chickweed is supposed to be good for stomach health and she is always trying to eat worse greens than chickweed during the forage walks.

Summary so far:
We think that she is acting more energetic and the poops have definitely improved since before we started the antibiotics. We are hopeful, but still understand that with the small penny sized lash egg and the fact that we waited so long to start the amoxicillin antibiotics, the prognosis from our research is still not very good long term.

Foods:
Ate some hard-boiled egg yolk
Still not very hungry.
Drank water with chickweed

Notes:
Still has energy and starts begging for her walk every time we walk by.

Crop smaller and softer, massaged crop more and stuff inside and crop itself kinda goes away after massaging, but fills back up with water and some stuff in there with water(probably the chickweed bits) Did massages like this throughout walks and during day maybe 8 or so times.

Food:
Gave some hard-boiled egg yolk
Drank water with chickweed

Notes:
Still has energy and starts begging for her walk every time we walk by.

Crop feeling less hard than before but same consistency watery, continued with massages and same kinda of disappearing and returning behavior.

Noticed she was digging in box in the afternoon, we added some food again that night after walk which she was normally ignoring, she ate some crumble on her own and also drank some water on her own.

Weight 1315g that night

Mar 15th morning:
She ate a good amount of crumble and we felt the crop full of the crumble, I did a little crop massage and the crumble moved around, I did not massage enough to collapse it since it is freshly added and want to give her some time to do this on her own, will massage more in afternoon foraging time.

Morning weight 1300

She is lighter again, but making more poop quantity, so still have some hope, compared to earlier where nothing was leaving her and her crop was just holding food doing nothing.

Poop has been about the same during these 3 days, quantity seems to be slowly picking up, but about the same type as Mar 15th maybe a little more and she is still picky eating food but will eat and drink water occasionally while she is in her hospital, We always found atleast some food in crop and would massage until the ball would flatten several times a day

Diet mainly crumbles food, chickweed, sometimes some bits of hardboiled egg yolk, and whatever larva, worms, grubs, unknown life she finds under the surface of leaves and topsoil. She also will sneak in some tips of grass(bad girl) and falsehawksbeard(a plant that is safe for them to eat), or other plant when we arent diligent enough to catch her. She is still very spunky and bolted full speed to catch a very small frog and ate it.

We also think she is bored as whenever we open the top she quickly jumps up before I can even put the lid down. So we added a peep hole for her to look out of from garage. She is always watching us when we peek in the hole.
