my gosling got it's foot stuck in some fencing and tore off it's middle toenail. the toenail is gone down to the quick. I cleaned it and put stiptic (spl) powder on it but it was bleeding so much that it continued. The gosling was struggling too so that didn't help.
I put it in the garage in a small dog crate with a towel in it.

Now what? I am alone until very late tonight so any bandaging or more intensive care will need to wait.

Help please.

As my Mom always used to say, "That's a long way from his heart". He should be fine. The styptic pencil was a good idea and probably helped stem much of the bleeding.

LOL Sourland.

I've dealt with a few torn toenails in the past 6 weeks, catching my large flock of rescue geese for assorted reasons. Apply pressure until bleeding stops and your goose should be just fine.

Thanks sourland.
Now that I have him settled and have cleaned the poo and blood off of myself. I will elaborate. He was favoring the leg but I don't know if it was because the toe hurt or there was a further injury. He was limping a little but I would probably do the same if I tore off my toenail.

I will keep him seperate tonight at least. If the toenail has stopped bleeding by morning, should I let him back with the rest of the gang and just keep an eye on it? The others were not happy when I took him away, they are within earshot so when I was trying to clean, he was making a fuss and they were responding to that very loudly.

I can come up with something to keep him in for a little bit. The crate he is in is not appropriate for more than tonight. He can stand but not really extend but its all I had available.

Any suggestions on further care?

Thanks Iain. I will set him free in the am then. I appreciate the reply.

Oh and I was following your rescue efforts for the few weeks. Didn't see it right away. I'm glad to see that you were able to do so much and get so much help.

Thanks, Judy. It's been a huge undertaking to save these geese, but they are worth it.

Unless it is still bleeding and looking nasty, I'd release him tonight. Ripped toenails are superficial injuries, and keeping your gosling separated from his flock is rather stressful.

Thanks again. I'll quietly go check on him. It's full dark here already so I don't want to freak him or everyone else out.

Okay, I lied. I did go out to check on him but I think that it is me that is more freaked out than he is. I am still not used to how quiet and dark it is here at night.

As long as the hubby gets home at a reasonable hour, I will take him out to the coop tonight. Otherwise, he can go with me to the coop at 6 or 630 in the morning. I won't be able to carry him, a flashlight and open gates and locks.

I peeked in the garage door's window and he is laying down but alert (there's a light on in the corner cuz I have 3 chicks in there)

If the toenail continues to bleed, you should burn it.

You can use a soldering iron or heat up a teaspoon over a flame. Then press it against the injury for a second or two.

My goose once ripped off her middle toenail and bled all night. Blood was everywhere and plenty, and I was panicking. In the morning I called my vet, and she told me to burn it. I was really nervous, as it seemed very drastic, but the goose didn't even react to the burning (only to my pulling her foot), and the bleeding stopped immediately.

So, hubby got home very late so I let the gosling out this morning. The toenail wasn't bleeding and all was well as we walked up to the coop area. While I was filling up waterers I saw that it had started limping and favoring the leg (holding it up and occassionaly stretching it backwards and shaking it.

So, now what?

Should I confine him to limit use?

I have them in the run area which is about 40'X50'. I will start adding niacin too.
