Urgent, please help my hen!

i had a BR pullet do the SAME EXACT THING to me a couple weeks ago. she had a heat stroke and it impaired her walking, she couldn't walk for a while then a few days ago she has made improvements, she can stand again, just keep her clean and give her PLENTY!!!!!!!! of electrolytes. and put DE in her water, it helps tremendously w/ worms if she has any. and feed her good and she should recover like mine did.

Hello, just wanted to share something that helped us nurse our injured hen back to health a few years ago: One of our free range pet chickens; ten year old Golden Ticket got attacked by a critter and must have sustained a head injury. She couldn't recognize her friends, tried to attack them and would flip over on her back. We took her inside and pampered her as we could, but she kept dwindling away.

After a few days our friend Patrick suggested that she might benefit by seeing her flock mates again. We took her outside but she was too week to scratch and could barely stand. Even in her weakness, a nearby kale plant caught her eye and she aimed a feeble peck that way. Suddenly I remembered how important leafy greens are to health & healing, so I picked a leaf and quickly cut it into bits with my fingernail, offering it to GT on my hand. She pecked it up so fast I knew we were onto something. After a teaspoonful or so, she stopped and seemed to take a nap for a few minutes. When she woke she pecked up all the rest of the chopped leaf, and stood a bit steadier.

We brought her back inside and I made her one of my favorite breakfasts; leafy greens & fruit smoothie, which she LOVED and ate like crazy. Within a week she was nearly back to normal, enough to go outside in a small pen with one or another of her flock mates. She made a full recovery and lived another couple years as the matriarch of the flock.

Here's the recipe I used for Leafy Greens Smoothie: Start with 2.5 cups of water in the blender, add 1 cup blueberries and 1 banana, then stuff in about two cups of leafy greens like spinach, kale, romaine, parsley, celery, stinging nettles, dandelion leaves, collard greens, etc. and blend till smooth. Kept cold it keeps well for two days. Great health tonic for humans & chickens too!

Thank you everyone,

And Cochin girl, if the worms are sucking her nutrients then it doesn't matter what he eats, they take it from her. I really want to try this though as it might encourage her to eat somethin that she enjoys and not just the baby food I'm force feeding her. So thanks a ton for that recipe.

Also tomorrow I am back to work. I know I am going to worry all day because I won't be able to force her to eat and drink during the day. I hope she makes it

She finally pooped tonight and I was really hoping that since I gave her the piperazine I would find a few worms flushed into it but no

just bright green poo. She's breathing very heavily now.

I hope your Agnes gets better (my EE is named Agnes too).

The egg is about the best nutrition for her as it is complete. Fruits and greens are helpful and may perk her appetite but use eggs as the main meal. If you can get some live mealworms try that --they are loaded with protein! Even if she has internal parasites (worms) she needs to get plenty of food--she will get some of the nutrients and calories.

Believe it or not-- for a quick calorie boost you can give her some prune juice. It's used at zoos for debilitated birds especially the large ones. I would give no more than about 2-3cc's (about half teaspoon) twice a day. It does have a mild laxative effect so no more at first. I saved a hen who had a gizzard impaction with prune juice and eggs and she felt so great after 3 weeks of this she went back out to the flock! She ate greens and her normal feed and scratched around the yard. She had actually passed the impaction. The sad part is she died a month later from the toxins of the food that was stuck in the creases of her gut.

This was all overseen by a vet and I had her necropsied after she passed to be sure of the cause.

Here's a hug for you both (<<HUG>>)
