I was just treating the standard birds for lice, when I noticed this protruding from my RIR mix’s vent. My first thought was prolapse, but it doesn’t look like any prolapse I’ve ever seen before. I also noticed the yellow droppings stuck to her feathers. It’s not very large, none of it was visible while she was standing normally. I only noticed it after picking her up to dust her vent. Thoughts? I’ve never seen this before.
She’s acting normal otherwise. Eating, drinking, bossy. Maybe a bit sluggish, but that could be the lice too.

What should I do for treatment? Treat like a prolapse?
I feed Scratch and Peck starter soaked. I haven't had OS available the last few days as I've been out. I don't believe I've gotten an egg from her today.

That's incipient prolapse. It means she's straining to try to clear a blockage of some sort in her oviduct. You'd be wise to separate her from the flock before another chicken decides the prolapse is an offering on a mobile smorgasboard.

You know the drill. Calcium citrate right now. Plenty of fluids. Check on her frequently, and be prepared to treat a prolapse if the calcium doesn't work quickly enough. https://www.backyardchickens.com/ar...ng-from-vent-prolapse-oh-my-what-to-do.76124/

Got it, thank you.
I figured it was something of the sort, though wanted to double check I was treating for the right thing. I don't have calcium citrate on hand which is annoying, but I do have a friend down the street who does.

This will make it easier to monitor what is expelled. You'll hope for a normal egg, but if it's collapsed and yolk is broken, she will need an antibiotic.
Definitely, I'm really hoping its not internal laying. The last hen I had with that, I believe you followed the thread, she didn't make it. Definitely not something I want to deal with. Crossing fingers for a whole egg. :fl

The friend isn’t getting back to me. I found calcium citrate, but it has other stuff in it too. Can I give it to her? I want to assume yes, but figured I’d double check.

Just checked other, and she's still acting fine. Checked her vent and the prolapse has receded, completely gone which is a relief. I didn't see anything that she might have expelled, so I'll continue to give calcium until she lays, or expels whatever is blocked.
