Was just wondering if anyone uses a radio in their coop to help keep predators away. I talked to my uncle last night who has had chickens all his life and he told me his chickens are educated chicks. I asked why and he told me that over the past 5 years he has only lost a couple of birds to predators because he leaves a small radio on in his coop all time and he has it tuned to NPR. So he calls his girls educated. So I am going to buy a small radio to hang in our coop when we do get our girls in there. Oh and his girls are not locked up at night and free range all over his farm (central PA).

It does not work for raccoons or possums. In fact. I've had the radio turned on and been grooming horses at night not 8 ft away from the cat food bowl and had raccoons walk up and start eating. And thats with a horse and a human nearby who is moving around alot trying to groom said draft horse.

Thanks for the info, it has worked for him fairly good as he does lose a chicken every now and then. Was just curios if anyone else had a radio in their coop.

heck a possum walked along a branch up above the land owner's head tonight while we were sitting in the dark talking, after a nice dinner done on the grill.

I went and got a flashlight and my pellet gun and gave it one, it was a small possum and I swear it dropped off the branch but then I couldn't find it.

A radio could work, I have my coop close to my trailer, and while possums are dopey and will come around anyway, my being so close may help keep coons away,

i have a radio on in the coop 24/7. i had read some studies that seemed to indicate chickens who listen to music lay more eggs than those who don't. i have no way of knowing if that is true or not, but i figured "why not?"
i, too, have the local npr station on for them. only because it's the only station that comes in clear all the time, so like it or not, that's what they listen to. classical music and left-leaning news. my chickens know more about world events than i do.
as for the radio keeping predators away... i don't know if it works or not, but i have never had a predator in the coop.
so it must work, right?
