using hay bales for winter warmth inside coop

Angie, I think most of those breeds are very winter hardy, except for the polish hen in your signature.

I think you could easily build a mini U-shaped coop inside your barn from straw bales, making it any size you want. Your barn area becomes their run. So they might sit on it and such, but you can easily muck it out in the spring. Cover each side with a tarp to prevent them eating it. Easy, inexpensive, biodegradable and flexible. Awesome!

You can button up the drafty side with plastic, but do include ventilation options. Chickens produce quite a bit of respiration.
