Using lard instead of shortening

How much lard (pounds) do you get out of a good size hog? I have not done it yet but someday I may try if given the time to.

What I like about this recipe, #1- my family LOVES it. #2 easy to make and freeze. and #3 no waste.

I get a whole pig from a local farmer, when processed I always get the fat for making lard. The home rendered stuff is the best no aftertaste like the store bought lard. I'vde got a puff ball doughtnut recipe that only works in lard. freze the extra in old ice trays. I think its 2 oz a cube then you don't have to measure. melts faster to for frying too

my Crisco can says it has 0 trans fats and 0 cholesterol. I read on the web that a cup of lard has 195 mg of cholesterol. Thanks, but my family has a history of heart problems. I don't care how good lard tastes, I'll stick to my Crisco.

You need to read up on your fats. Artificial or manufactured fats are far more detrimental to your cholesterol levels than natural fat. Seriously. There are many excellent books out there, websites, etc. where you can learn more. Human kind made it for eons without artificial fats - now they're getting sick, and it isn't because of nature.

What Reinbeau said.

Cholesterol doesn't cause heart disease. Fat doesn't cause heart disease. Excess carbohydrates and rancid omega 6 fatty acids (like those found in processed vegetable oils) cause heart disease.

In fact, the lower your cholesterol level, the higher your risk of death.

The important numbers in determining your heart attack risk are your A1C levels and your triglyceride levels.

Cholesterol alone is useless UNLESS you actually take the test that measures particle size.

Thank you, Wifey, for providing the links I was too tired to dig up and post last night!

Interesting topic this thread is turning into. I had heard that new studies were showing that lard and real butter is better for you as opposed margarine and shortening.

I just came upon a great deal of lard in a 25# bucket and thought I would try it instead fo crisco. However, at the time I didn't know that 'real' lard is better for you than hydrogenated. Which this bucket says 'partially' hydrogenated.
