Using old wood to build a coop????... PICS

Much, possibly most, of it looks very usable. Go for it!

But first BUY A HANDHELD METAL DETECTOR, the kind intended for finding stray metal bits in old boards and fenceline trees. And run it over everything before you cut. You will SO not regret it, and it will save you not only damage to your tools but the chance of a serious injury (power saw blade meets old-nail-broken-off-inside-board can be nasty...)

You might even see if you could sell some of the nicer stuff (wider, better condition) - depending what sort of area you're in, people may actually want to pay money for what you're not using yourself.

Have fun,

Pat

our first coop was built almost totally out of a old double car garage we tore down. And the coop we are building now is also all recycled materials.....I say tear it down and use it all. There are so many things you can do with that much wood!!!
People dont believe our coop was recycled materials...they think it was brought onto the property already built...not that we built it here out of "junk"

Fill it with dirt and make an herb garden out of it....

Put a glass circle on top, and make a table out of it.....

oh the possibilities....

Those were my ideas too

heck yeah!!!!!!!!!1
we built our coop from all salvaged wood plus it is better for the environment

When reusing the wood siding.... should I leave the worn side OUT or turn it inward? Edited to add that I have minimal tools available and will mostly be working with a hammer and nails! LMAO Maybe an electric screwdriver if I get lucky.... and the only other power tool I might have will be a saw (if I can borrow one) so sanding and planing isn't going to happen unless it's CRUCIAL.

By golly I get right out there and get every thing...I see enough stuff to build a very fine coop indeed. The rest of it you cut up into little peices and put in a barbeeque machine and burn to keep yer hands warm.

Just kidding of course. I will have to ask around... my mom's husband probably will bring his stuff out for me to use. The idea though is FREE wood...

I don't mind working harder if it means that I don't have to try and shell out a bunch of money... plus, I don;t have a good place to keep my own tools. Not until we move.

I might sugest also looking at hawk shops and the used tool place.
Try to get a worm drive saw...a little more money but its alot beter saw. I would loan you one of mine but you are clear down there in Florida.
Regarding the barrel I would go to a wherehouse and get some metal banding they use to palet stuff, wrap it around inside the grooves then fasten it with a self tapping tek screw.
I would make a feed despencer out of it or put suspenders on it and wear it...but thats just me.
