I touched on several different brooders in an article I wrote, and I have my eye on a new one which I would love to try this year so I can add it to the article. However, I just want to hear about your experience with it before I dive right it.

It’s one of those tent style puppy play pens like this: https://www.amazon.com/ESK-Collecti...=1&keywords=cat+playpen&qid=1614811446&sr=8-7

I would be using it for four ducklings. Thoughts?

ETA: I wouldn’t use a heat lamp, for numerous reasons including the fact it wouldn’t be compatible with this brooder. I have a heat plate and prefer it anyway

I have that same playpen for my dogs.
I do not have experience using this as a brooder but I would put something down on the bottom for easy cleanup of bedding. Even just a tarp or something would help.
If you use an hanging light be careful since the fabric material could catch fire. If you use a heat plate though it should be fine.

I like that this one has a removable top on it. When I used it for my puppy we could put the top on when people came over so little kids wouldn't try to pick her up or bother her and so when she was older she couldn't get out. This could apply for ducklings aswell.

I do like how it has a removable top too. And yes, I would be using a heat plate because I feel more comfortable with it, and have liked using it in the past. Putting something on the bottom isn’t a bad idea. I figure an old towel to wrap up all the shavings in would be great.

How will you wash it out?
Also, a heatlamp will melt the material it's made of.
By all means give it a go though, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts after using it

What do you mean wash it out? If you mean clean it out, I would put a towel on the bottom, out shaving in that, and wrap the old shavings in that.

I don’t use heat lamps anyway, I would use a heat plate.

Fair enough then. Should be fine.
I'm looking for a decent brooder as well, so let us know how you get on with it.
My chicks hatch on Saturday.

Ooh I can help here. I've used this before for my own dog, and it comfortably fits her and her bed. Then again, she is the size of a chihuahua. Never used it as a brooder. Like @EverythingDucks said, you will need to put something on the bottom for easy cleaning. The removable top makes it so easy to move things around and it'll definitely be a plus if you use it for a brooder. You do have to have extra precaution with a heat lamp since the material could catch on fire. Everything ducks had some great recommendations.

Maybe I should add to my original post that I won’t be using a heat lamp, because that’s what everyone’s asking here 😂
