Utah!

Mine did ok, but I was using the older wheat. It sprouted a little slower, and not quite as dense. I soaked it on a Thursday night, started it in the tray on Friday night, and fed to them this morning...so 9 1/2 days instead of the 6 it should take. They LOVED it! I did not get a picture before I fed it...but it was about 4-5 inches tall, nice and lush. Not quite as thick as the pics from the others I saw on the fodder thread though, but the consensus is that the fresher wheat has a much better germination rate. I am still going to use up some of my older wheat this way though, even if it takes a little longer, it just makes sense to save the money on feed by using that up. I have not soaked a new batch yet, we were moving patio furniture, and getting the garage cleaned out today to get ready for the cold snap. I plan to get some soaking tomorrow night, I am going to do one batch of the older wheat and one batch of the newer wheat just to compare. Cynthia says it is a night and day difference..I want to to have alittle fun with the new stuff

They really ate every single strand. My WR that has been broody, and got thin, was standing in one of the feed pans biting at the other gals trying to get some. She must know that she really needed that healthy stuff!
Hopefully Cynthia can post pics when hers is done for you. I will get a pic of my next batch before feeding. It does get a little stinky toward the end, I rinsed like crazy to be sure it did not mold, and put it outside during the day yesterday because my kitchen smelled kinda funky. Just to warn ya

I think some seeds on the bottom were fermenting. I am going to make a little bit bigger drainage holes this time in my foil, or find some more containers.

I will post more pictures..hope it works out. So far so good.

Lisa, my old wheat was starting to stink up my room it was in as well. I was also keeping it wet until I saw how this new worked, I think it stunk because of the fermenting. I got all of that out, and now have all new in...not so smelly! Think about it, those old kernel's were sitting in there for a long time, these are growing and soaking up that water. When I went to pour it out, it was bad smellin!
I think you will be excited to see the difference.

Clipping wings...monsters, we have all been monsters, but Lisa is right. Find a treat, they will love you again. :)

Did I read the words...freezer camp? :( I have a friend in Taylorsville area, she eats her roos on a reg. basis. She has pheasant too. I love pheasant.

hope you all do not mind but i have a chicken joke that i think you all may enjoy :) "This farmer had an old rooster and he thought it might be time to get a new young rooster to service his hens. He got himself a new rooster and let him loose with the old rooster. The young rooster went right over to the old rooster and challenged him to a fight. The old rooster said, "Sonny, I'm too old to fight. Just follow me around, and I'll show you the place." The young rooster agreed and started to follow the old rooster around. The old rooster showed him the barn, then the hen house...then started to run. The young rooster thought the old rooster was trying to pull a quick one, so he chased after him madly.
All of a sudden, there came a loud "Bang!" and there stood the farmer, muttering "Dangit, that's the third gay rooster I've had to kill this month." :gig

Good morning chickies! I went out to gather eggs.... better get out there sooner. The time changed and they are laying an hour earlier on my new clock! I cannot believe none of them were broken.

Beautiful eggs, Lisa!!! Mine don't usually lay this early in the day.

Loved the rooster joke. Too funny.

Cynthia, my BCM rooster is not a very good example of the breed- his feathers are a dark mahogany instead of that orange color, and there's some white in his tail. I could live with all of that, but when I was harvesting potatoes last week, he knocked my 5 year old to the ground. If you are going to be mean, you have to be absolutely stunningly beautiful. Soooo.

Thanks! That is by far the most I have gotten at once this early in the day, usually 8 or so by ten, then another 8 - 12 throughout the day, they must have all gotten up early this morning :) Seems to me like mine have really started laying regularly in the last week or so. Maybe the molting is about done, and the light is working....it comes on pretty early.

Your new rooster will be perfect! Good timing! Are you going to freezer camp your other one? I have to envy people that can process their own and use for food. I am too big of a wimp. It sure makes sense though moneywise. I have to give my older girls to my neighbor and he does it and uses them. That is even hard for me. I wish I could do it, I am hoping I will get more desensitized to it as time goes on and be able to do it....ugh!

No, I'm going to bring mine to Sundance and let her figure out how to deal with it.

I have 19 (I think?) chickens. Four boys, and two way too young to lay. On a good day, I get 7 eggs. I don't think I've gotten more than that in a day. So far today, I have a cream colored egg, a light brown, and a dark brown. Speckled sussex in the box, so another light brown soon.
