Hello Casa, I'm in SLC and can't seem to keep mediterranean birds alive. We have a mixed flock of brahma, barred rock, sussex, marans, and wyandotte. We had a sicilian buttercup until the first cold snap this fall when she died. We have a pair of 14 week old pullets that had been doing pretty well until this morning, the marans is fine but the andalusian was lethargic this am We were in the upper 20's last night everbody had been doing well, no heat lamp last night just looks as if she exhausted herself trying to stay warm. She came out and sunned herself but now she has died. I wasn't trying to be irresponsible but are these hard feathered breeds really that cold tender in your experience or do i need to figure out something else? On a lighter note our brahma "rooster" lays beautiful eggs( hatchery sexed)so i guess they blow it every now & again.

I don't know anyone with the andalusian on this thread, or the cicilian. Maybe you can go to that particular site..just go type in that breed up at the top, maybe there is a thread on those birds. I'm sorry for your loss. Your other birds sound like good winter faring birds. I've all of those breeds do well in the winter.

well i did not go to cal ranch today. the ad did not tempt me enough. but in other news my sis who lives out near vernal with a bit of land is wanting to work with me to raise a bunch of meat so it looks like next year we will do a beef cow, and a bunch of meat chickens and possibly some turkeys. she may even do meat rabbits but i am not sure if i will be in on that one much. for the turkeys it would be ideal to have a trio and hope they hatch out lots of babies each year, maybe if needed stick them one at a time under a silkie (can you imagine a silkie mother with a baby turkey?

) also i will be getting my sister a few silkies for her birthday in the spring and several layers, most likely black sex links or something because eggs are so expensive out there

Ok, I want to see that, the Silkie with a big baby turkey.

You would have to make sure she only had one!!

If you are wanting an older Silkie to start with, I will be selling my blue splash that is broody right now. Her first time. She is being a very good mama. I have two eggs under her, and two in the bator, that when the time comes, she will have those put with her. I have a feeling she will be very protective. She will not leave the nest area. I put food right under her nose. She ate really good today. Anyway, if you want her, let me know. I have another Silkie, a cochin, and the Frizzle Partridge. so plenty of broodies coming up! Not sure about that Frizzle, sure is gorgeous, but thinking it's a boy. You never know. I will hold out for the crow, like Lisa did. lol..only Lisa thought she had a girl. I feel bad for her..I bet that showgirl is really pretty. There has to be someone on here that wants a showgirl roo!

I didn't go to any of the sales today. I thought for sure you were going to Cal Ranch. If they had a nice big feeder on sale, I would get it.

Stinkin Chicken. Ha!

I had a guy call about my polish roos last week and I had already sold them. I had his number, called him up, and he came right over and got my baby showguy rooster. Funny thing, he happens to have some silkies....and has a leghorn/silkie cross girl, so he wants to breed the showguy with her. Interesting? I asked if I could have some chicks and we worked out a deal. Maybe they will turn out cute who knows. His girl has silkied feathers but no vaulted head. More of a leghorn look just the silkied feathers. She is white, so the white babies might be something fun, we will see :) Probably be a lot better layer than this would have been if a girl.

Ahhh at least there is one little happy note at the end of my ownership of that sweet baby. It was HARD to say goodbye. That was one really really sweet baby.
