Cynthia, long time no talkl, how are you? ALL my hens are in molt. All but my young Cochin Bantam, and the Polish Baby. No eggs in WEEKS. Lol Anyone elses hens in MOLT?

Hi Hector!

Yes I have three in molt...one has completely stopped laying, the other two lay about every 4-6 days. Not much. NO FUN! MY White Rock is back to being broody....so my egg count is going th wrong direction now ;) i sure would love to see a pic of your buffed lace Polish if you get a chance. Love mine so much...same hatch as yours....and she has a great personality...but yours is the one with the best head feathers and lacing. I have been hoping I could see how she turns out as she grows up, she was one cute baby!

Sorry for laughing Lisa I couldn't help but laugh when i got a mental picture of you out there cussing out show guy

I will try to get some good pictures of my Polish :) She is super cute, quick, and way curious haha. I really love her.

Hector, that would be great!

Slvrphoenix...oh it is pretty funny actually now that I am done being mad at him/her. I am glad I had a place for it to go, quick! BUT of all the chickens I have, WHY did it have to be that one >! Exasperation at these little guys always tricking us. Cynthia, you will have to check out your records and let me know where is the best place to get showgirl hatching eggs/which ones hatched best for you. I am going to give it a try. Just one batch, I know they are tough...but have to try once at least! I really want another white one, just like my last one only female!

Hello Casa, I'm in SLC and can't seem to keep mediterranean birds alive. We have a mixed flock of brahma, barred rock, sussex, marans, and wyandotte. We had a sicilian buttercup until the first cold snap this fall when she died. We have a pair of 14 week old pullets that had been doing pretty well until this morning, the marans is fine but the andalusian was lethargic this am We were in the upper 20's last night everbody had been doing well, no heat lamp last night just looks as if she exhausted herself trying to stay warm. She came out and sunned herself but now she has died. I wasn't trying to be irresponsible but are these hard feathered breeds really that cold tender in your experience or do i need to figure out something else? On a lighter note our brahma "rooster" lays beautiful eggs( hatchery sexed)so i guess they blow it every now & again.

I have two Andalusians that I recently adopted. So far they've been okay, but they are full grown hens. If your birds are only 14 weeks old and struggling with the really cold nights, I would suggest covering them up overnight or moving them somewhere warmer until they have their adult feathers. Some of my birds get put in the garage overnight when it's really cold, since it's well insulated in there and I can put a light on them for extra warmth.

Last winter, I had two pullets that I got from a home where they were very stressed, so they were quite scrawny when they came to me. You don't have to do this, but I actually went to the thrift store and found a thick blanket, covered a pet carrier with it, and then put a tarp on top of that. I stuffed some straw inside the carrier for them to sleep in. It worked pretty well.

The kind of feed that you give them can help them to stay warm, too. My Andalusians get a lot of cracked corn in their feed, which helps them with warmth. My chickens also gets treats now and then, such as cooked rice or oatmeal, to help them stay warm and full. So far, my Leghorn has been alright with the snow and ice, but her comb hasn't grown in fully yet. When they have a larger comb like that, they're more susceptible to the cold (you probably already knew that, sorry)

When you put it that way, I can't help but laugh, too. Lisa needs to try and get boys. Then they'll turn out to be girls for her

Hey Chiko! Long time no see. Sorry to hear that so many of your girls are on strike and molting. At least now they'll be nice and fluffy for winter, right?

Before I forget again to say it here - My black Ameraucana "girl" crowed the other day.

I was so looking forward to some pretty green eggs, too. Oh well. Anyone looking for a purebred Ameraucana cockerel? He's free to anyone on here who wants him.

Birdman, your sister will want heritage breeds of turkey, if she's going to use them partly for hatching poults. Both the commercial strains, Broad-breasted Bronze and Broad-breasted Whites, grow fast for meat and aren't really able to breed naturally. There are so many pretty turkey breeds to choose from, though. I know Birdguy has a few at his place.

Yeah! Sold three laying hens

Oh...Someone sold me 6 Pigeons

Hey that's plus three in my books. I'll have to get pictures, they all won awards and stuff and he gave me the trophies so I had to buy award winners
