Utah!

Okay, über-bummed today. Somehow my incubator temp got set to 101.5. Don't know how, since it was set correctly before, but I must have accidentally hit the up button a few times sometime in the past week or so. In any case, it killed all the remaining eggs in lockdown--an entire batch of cream legbars and Isbars.

I broke the shells open on them and they were all fully developed and all dead.

I candled the rest of the eggs incubating in there and saw movement in at least a few of them, so I'm hopeful for the rest of them. But the Isbars were a big loss--expensive eggs, those, and a little hard to come by. I have another dozen cream legbars, so hopefully some of those will hatch. I did manage to help one of the cream Legbars in lockdown hatch out yesterday, but she isn't walking and doesn't look good at all. Don't think she is going to make it. The 2 Welsummers that hatched are doing great--looks like a boy and a girl, so a nice matched set for Joel.

I'm rather determined to have Isbars, so I may just have to find somewhere to order another set...

Don't give up on your little one that you helped out. Remember my miracle baby? It had a lot of yolk to absorb, just kept it in the bator until it was, then once it was, I started giving it some electrolytes. I don't do the full amount suggested with that stuff on new babies. I put a tiny bit into a glass, fill it with water until the water is just barely yellow. That's enough for the little new ones trying to make it. Too much of it seems to be hard on them. I give it one hr. then another hr, then I go to two hrs. Then they are usually coming around, so I stop it all together until it is sitting up and with the others. I have some in their water for a short time. Still, not full strength, but more so than the little bit of yellow.
Good luck on your baby.

I have her in the bator still-- took her out briefly to clean her off a little, then up her back in. I had to take the Welsummers out because I was afraid they would start pecking her. She seems to have a little bit of internal organ sticking out her backside and I'm pretty sure her legs/feet are a little too small for her body, but we'll give her a few day to see how things go. I'd hate to lose her-- female cream Legbars are high on my priority list since most of them were stolen from the land. I'm going to start her on a light dose of infant vitamins. I've had pretty good luck with that in the past. It's that small red bulge off the backside that makes me think she likely won't make it. I've only ever had that happen to one other chick and I had to put it down after a week. Total failure to thrive and it just couldn't move. Still, one never knows, so we'll do what we can.

Uh, revised update. We just took a look at that baby chick--she was actually up and walking around. When I looked in the incubator, I though I saw a large bloody poop behind her, so I took her out to make sure she was clean enough. It wasn't poop. It was attached and I'm pretty sure it was her liver. She has a 1/4" diameter hole in her lower belly with clear intestinal loops and organs hanging out. Nothing going to save that, I'm afraid. My roommate kindly agreed to euthanize her. I usually don't have a problem with doing what needs to be done, but that was kind of a hard one for me. :(

That is awful. I had an organ prolapse chick too...the hole where the umbilical cord was just did not close up properly, and every time it cheeped more would keep falling out. Poor baby, Sorry you had to go through that, I remember it really shook me up...it did even again to read about it happening to you. It is really awful to have to see that :( :hugs

Yes, just one..lol..I did get one last year, and so far only one. :p Hope it stays that way, I have some more eggs going in for the hatch a long. That lady came through for me, she sent me 11 eggs. Barred Rock, but they are Blue Barred Rock. And, my Welsummer eggs came too. Those eggs are soo pretty! I love the ones that have the large speckles.
I have more Olive Eggers coming, so determined to get that olive egg this year. And some EE's again. She had white ones! Love those. I hope I get a few..girls. And, she threw in more eggs..olive eggs..lol..and cochin eggs for 10 dollars extra..that included the extra 4.50 it would cost to ship. Wow. I had written her before her eggs were done being big on, had asked her if they would go out by Wed. She didn't answer until the time was up. That's when she wrote me asked if I still wanted them. Then she started throwing in more eggs, for just a small amount..I have been wanting a splash LF cochin. Or a splash Ameraucana. She says she is getting splashes out of the cochin eggs..we shall see.
That baby EE is darling Lisa, nice big muff, just the way you like it! Didn't see any of those at our Cal Ranch. I haven't been to IFA yet down here since they have started selling them. Best not!

Corvidae, I am so sorry for your losses. What a rotten day for you. :( You will get some Isbars, I promise!

I have a story in the making. My friend is hatching some of my eggs under her broody. I gave her 7. Four ended up dying along the way (they got pecked by her other hens). They're supposed to hatch Sunday night. Today I went over there to help her get a second coop set up and move her broody over there so the babies would be safe. While we were doing that, another hen managed to lay a monster egg (seriously, it was one of the biggest eggs I've ever seen) right on top of the eggs. One of them pretty much shattered. We thought it was a goner, but we could see some movement through the membrane, so we stuck it in my incubator. I still think it'll die, but at least we tried, right?

So instead i got three silkies and a bantam ee.

Two silkies have chicks and the ee is the one sitting on eggs. The other silkie is special, wry neck at 3 weeks old, and she is almost 1 year. Dont know if she will ever go broody and if she does i don't think she will remember what she is doing 30 minutes later. But we still love her and her 4-5 eggs a week. I should get a video of her some day. We named her twister for obvious reasons.
