Utah!

Oh, man. Twenty-one pages to catch up on. I have been so busy and so tired. I know I'll kick myself tomorrow for staying up this late to check the forum. I hope everyone is doing well.

Got five turkey eggs from birdguy at Chickenstock and put them under my broody turkey last night. Got her and the eggs moved into a carrier tonight, and I think I am going to put food and water dishes in with her. She looks beat. Got to meet some more chicken people at the 'stock and chat poultry, and got to ride with the wonderful Lisa there and back. Lisa, I am so glad I caught you in time to carpool! I was seriously falling asleep on the way up to Logan. It were mighty scary. Got to cuddle with Sasha's banty Wyandotte, Clay. What a sweetheart. Made me wish so bad that my Wyandotte girls were bantam and that I didn't already have roosters. I was so disappointed that no one would buy him. He needs an excellent new home!

My greenhouse blew over today

Lost some of the plants I was sprouting in there and broke one of my good, big pots. Greenhouse won't stand up straight now, so I gotta fix it this week. I was so upset. It was just the straw that broke the camel's back today. My broody EE seems about done with being broody. her baby is now roosting on his own and not tagging along after her all of the time. And I checked the eggs under my broody Wyandotte. All three from the Welsummer pullet are infertile; the other four from various girls are developing and becoming quite dark.

Headache says go to bed. Good night, all. Take care!

sundance, wish I had room for that in my back yard! Would be great. I have two coops now. hmmm, trying to think, trying to think. I just don't see any room.. I took pictures for our son out in GA. so he could see spring in our yard. I love this purple tree, can't remember the name of it. And I love love tulips! My favorite flower. I need to thin them out. My bleeding bush is doing great this year. You can see the peonies starting in front of the bleeding heart bush. This little bush is just starting to blossom out. It has a lot to go. Pretty big pink ones. They make me smile. :)) Bleeding heart bush, going to have a lot on it. Austin loves this bush.
is that a flowering plum? or a redbud? kinda hard to tell from the picture. also i too love tulips. i have a lot of fun with them, they are fun to cross :)

I have a grow out pen I am going to sell. Works great for mom and chicks, baby turkeys or ducks. Its 4x8 covered with hardware cloth. lid is split int 4x4 sections. I am asking $30.00 its painted blue. If anyone here wants it let me know before I put on ksl
do you have a photo? I'm going to need one, but not sure how I will get it home, cause I doubt it will fit in the back of my Yukon. lol. does it break down in sections pretty easy, or can you deliver it to Cedar Hills if I pay you extra.?

Thanks
Karen

So I brought home some adorable Silkie chicks last night that I got from themadchicken-Gary. I just love them. They are so adorable, I can't stop watching them. But I'm really worried about the one. We brought them home last night, and the other 3 are running around like crazy children, and the one wants to lay directly under the light, and hasn't had any food or water that I have noticed. This morning had really bad bloody pasty butt, so I used a warm wash cloth and cleaned her up. I tried dipping her beck in the water several times to see if it will encourage her to drink, but she just goes right back over under the light and goes back to sleep. Am I just being a very worried butt mom, or is there something I can do to help her out. I just hope its not something that I caused. Any suggestions....

I have no meds on hand, so if you suggest anything, please let me know where I can get them. I have them on Medicated Chick Crumbles, and the other 3 are piggy out on it, so I keep putting this chick with them, hoping it will encourage this one to eat, but nope. What can I do to help her out.

Thanks
Karen

Cynthia--I think Gary is right about that being a Golden Campine -- They had some at chickenstock and they did have the faces like that! I had not even thought about that, cool! The quail eggs are jumbo coturnix. Crossing fingers. Nothing else will hatch lately, might as well try these instead. Yes those houdans get fat, and rotund lol I love it. I remember being surprised at how they would stuff themselves too. Especially the first few days after arrival. They get bigger than the Polish, about the same as the other big girls. I am so excited you got some! Wish I had more room, I would get more...next year they are on my list for sure.

Sphinx, that is awesome those eggs are doing so good! Both batches! I have had the worst hatches with my shipped eggs lately. Too much money down the tubes, dang! I really need to just get eggs locally or buy chicks. Only some of the ones I really wanted this year are only available from afar. Aargh!

Red, glad to see you there! That is sad about your greenhouse dang it! I have had that problem with my greenhouse shelf unit, I put it out back and it blows over so much..last year all my starts were ruined. It is really tall and narrow. I keep thinking maybe I will tie some rope to the top and stake it in the grass, then I don't get it done before the wind starts up. I have not got anything in it now, but wanted to put my tomatoes I bought out there to grow a bit more before planting, I hope it stays nice out for awhile. I got some of those sunsugar kind everybody on here was raving about last year, I hope they do well, I am excited!

Wow, it's fun and informative to read through all the posts since I was on here last! Lots of information to gather.

We found a coop this weekend. My grandson thinks it will make a very nice chicken playhouse. We will have to add a run to it.

So, I have two questions for today.
The first one is about the run - How tall should we make it and should it be covered? The hubs doesn't want to worry about covering it because the birds will be inside the coop at night. If we don't cover it, then he thinks we can get away with making a three foot high run to save some money.
The second question is about the interior. Should I use lime wash or paint? What do you all do? I'm leaning towards lime wash but I'm concerned it won't clean up as easily as a good semi-gloss paint.

I have both Splash Marans and BBS Mottled Ameraucana eggs in my incubator set to hatch May 24th. Would anybody be interested in them if I end up hatching extras? I only need a few for a project. The rest will be available.

I have been using kitchen and bath gloss paint inside my coops. I do deep litter so I only completely clean every four months. When I do the full cleaning, I hose it out, spray a bleach solution (I hear oxide is better and am thinking about ordering that), and throw DE arou d the entire coop.

I bought some mealworms for my older chicks that are outside in the run, and they love them. Anyone buy them online somewhere that has a good price in bulk. The guy at the petstore told me they are good in the Fridge for about a month. So I thought I would buy a bulk lot of them.

Thanks

You may have predators so covering is best. 3 ft is fine its covered . Many chickens can go right over a 3 ft fence even with their wings clipped
