Utah!

Wow, it's fun and informative to read through all the posts since I was on here last! Lots of information to gather. We found a coop this weekend. My grandson thinks it will make a very nice chicken playhouse. We will have to add a run to it. So, I have two questions for today. The first one is about the run - How tall should we make it and should it be covered? The hubs doesn't want to worry about covering it because the birds will be inside the coop at night. If we don't cover it, then he thinks we can get away with making a three foot high run to save some money. The second question is about the interior. Should I use lime wash or paint? What do you all do? I'm leaning towards lime wash but I'm concerned it won't clean up as easily as a good semi-gloss paint.
welcome. i cover my run. birds of prey will take a bird out of a run. and a 3 foot fence will not keep a chicken in, actually i have seen mine fly up 6 feet from the ground and even then some can fly higher. tho i do not clip my girls wings. but even with clipped wings a chicken can get over a 3 foot fence. i did not paint the inside of my coop. it will just get dirty anyway. for the fence if you want to use chicken wire if you go to lowes or home depot by the stucco and all that they sell chicken wire in huge rolls. they even have much thicker stuff and its much cheaper in the long run buying it like this. tell your husband it is much cheaper to do it right the first time. replacing birds all the time cost a lot of money and you may be egg free for a while. plus you will fall in love with your chickens i bet. and i would not be shocked if he fell in love with them too.

Shmeal ..

You are wise not to paint the inside. I also worried about the paint coming off and the chickens eating it. Of course, I guess that could happen on the outside too. :/ ?

Thank you Brad ~ I love my flowers. And, I do believe that tree is a Rosebud. It is more purple than pink. It's still pretty young.

I sold all of my Houdans! That was fast. I kept two.

Pretty sure my Mystery chick is a Buttercup. I know they are flighty. We will see what I think of her as she grows. She isn't very skittish right now.
Check out the comb! My little one has a double funny thing going on..that's how I could tell the difference between her being a Buttercup, or a Campine. Campines have single combs..learned it on the "what is this breed." :)

Here is a pic of Sundance's grow out coop. It looks great! I tried to talk my DH into heading that way, but he is too busy, so hopesomebody else on here is lucky enough to get it!

She said the lids slide on and have screens for shade. I cannot get the picture to go bigger, it came on my phone, but you can save it to your computer then zoom in :)

This is actually a really good pen for little chicks. I have seen it in person and actually climbed into it to catch my Bantam RIR and chicks that Sundance let my buy. Its a little over knee high (my knees and im kind of a big guy) and very light. I think its about 4" x 8" and would be great for chicks to move around on the lawn and dirt so they can get used to the big world and still be safe. The top slides of in two pieces. This is a great buy!!

I totally could use that, but I don't think it will fit in my Yukon :( Any one driving down to Utah County that could bring it to me for gas money. Here's to hoping right!
