Utah!

What is the deep litter method? I just don't want them to smell or my hubby might scream! LOL I do clean them out every week with new shavings, well actually the last 2 weeks, I've only been fully cleaning out the one side of the coop, they all seem to just pile in a chick pile in the one corner on the floor, and it doesn't even look like anything else has been touched. So its not the coop at all that has the odor, and I just noticed it with all the rain. I'm hoping that the Oxine will help, but I need to read up tomorrow on how to mix the stuff and get a gallon sprayer. I did get some type of stall deodorizer the other day when I got some more chick starter, but I was told from the lady at IFA to spread it on the coop floor and then put the shavings on top of that, so I figure I would do that this week with their weekly cleaning. But I didn't want to have to spread that all over the large run every week.

I have only done this method and have loved it. I am anal about the chicks in the house, I don't find it to work as well in the house.

But would you do that for an outside run? I was thinking of getting the DE, but the lady told me the stall cleaner was better. But that was just for the coop. But I like the thought about the DE helping with mites. :D

At first I thought Maran too, would be nice to get another Maran, but then again who knows. The one for sure has puffy chicks, the white one is like the odd ball out. Well just have to wait and watch them all grow up.

My guesses were 2 EE's and an australorp the others

... I guess you'll have to see how they feather out!! It's like having a treasure box with the lid open all the time as you keep trying to guess what they are, lol

thank you cynthia for the RIR's. My first hend and I'm very excited about having them. They are extremely sweet and seem to like the new coops and run. Whenever the blue EE is up for grabs let me know she was a beauty! They all were. It was really nice to meet you and your husband today:)

I know it's been said before, I think Cynthia has supplied about all of us with chickens at some point or another, sundance too, actually!

My marans and bresse arrived today! Four bresse chicks and seven marans. So excited!!

In less exciting news, I found out today, via text, that my grandmother is in the terminal stage of pancreatic cancer. They say she has a week left. I feel all the worse because I haven't seen her in four years and can't say goodbye. I took the day off work to process a bit. Not sure if anyone is in SLC that wants any of the birds I have, but today looks to be a good day to pick them up. Many boys here, and two houdan pullets left. I have a meeting tonight, but before five thirty I am here.
Oh, so sorry about your grandmother

that is hard to see someone you love suffer...

What kinds of Marans did you get?

So with all this rain we have gotten the run is really muddy and it does have a tad bit of a smell to it. What is the best stuff to put down in the run that will help with odor control and easy to clean. I tried raking it up so I could scope up the poops, but it made a bigger mess. The coop is dry and clean inside, its the run that has the odor. Positive note, the girls out are free ranging. I didn't give them the whole yard yet, just under the smaller side with the chain link closed, I wanted to be able to watch them since I'm worried about the magpies. I will have to take some photos, now it just needs to warm up so I can through the 4 1/2 week olds outside during the day too.

I use straw also in the outside runs, shavings in the brooder boxes in the garage.. Straw is awesome b/c it absorbs and then you can put it in the compost pile later, the chickens chop it into bits for you.. I also deep litter in the coop itself and clean it every few months, the outside run about every 6 weeks or so, depending on what I've been throwing in there for them and if I need more of their poop in the compost bins, lol

I will have to go get some from IFA tomorrow, I'm sure my Hubby will love that. He already said he didn't want shavings all over the place. haha! My side yard and under my deck have gone to the chickens. :D

How do you store it? Just under a tarp? I'm guessing you don't want it to get wet, and how often do you fully change it out? Sorry for all the questions.

If you put it under a tarp, be sure and put it on some wood or a pallet or something, if the bottom of it gets wet (which it will from the ground), it will start to rot, then you'll only be able to put it in the compost bin

Lilwanis, I am so sorry about the news about your grandmother. I'd be devastated.

When my run gets goopy and muddy, I either use straw, hay, grass clippings, or sand. Whatever I can actually get my hands on easily at the moment.

Welcome Kyle.

Sundancen, you need to make sure that you don't push yourself too hard- you don't want to end up in the hospital again. I need to take a picture of your broody hen. She tries so hard to get her babies under her at night, except that they're all about the same size as her now, so it isn't going so well. It's kind of funny, but sweet at the same time.

Lol, that's funny about the broodies, one of the bantam cochins that has chicks now is really tiny, she has 4 chicks that are almost a month old, and they are starting to have a hard time getting under her, it's funny to watch them battle for position, lol

How do you mix it for cleaning, I have the unactivated, and do you put it in their water too? I think I might try out the straw, but and just spread it around the run area and under the coop. I just don't want the smell, I really don't care if its muddy. The coop is actually clean and doesn't smell its the dang dirt, but then again, they have been stuck in the run for 3 weeks, so now with them getting out everyday it should be much better.

Hey Silly,

Forgot to check the measurements on the Oxine. Think it's 6 1/2 ounces per gallon, but please PM me and I'll check tomorrow. Had my hands full tonight so forgot to look. DH's horse got out and ate a half bag of Omolene 400, plus had a baby Cashmere goat born tonight.... pics tomorrow!!! Dang if it isn't a boy so he'll be up for sale. Hoping I looked at the plumbing wrong, cause it was kinda dark.

I use Oxine on everything!!! I put it in one of those pump weed sprayers to dispense. I have put it in their drinking water but that is hit and miss. Plus, if I'm feeling a little neurotic, I have a vaporizer that I put it in, in my chick house. I run it a couple hours a day, just to control any bacterial or viral germs that may have found their way through my bio-security system.

Again, Silly, please PM me and give me a day to get back to you.... have a busy day planned for tomorrow.

There are mixing instructions, etc. for Oxine on the "Fungal Infections" page on the site in my sig.

Sorry I haven't been on this thread in about a week to know people have been looking for such info.

Who on here knows their Bantams? I posted photo's of my little Roo on "What Breed Is This" to see if someone can tell me what he is, so I can try and re-home the little guy. 3 People said a Bantam d'Uccle of some type, and a few said he will be a Barbu d'Uccle. Now I do have a pullet, that I think is going to stay a pullet that looks 100% like his twin, and then of course my tiny peanut, that is 1/2 the size of the 2 in question. Now my EE's and RIR that are 2 weeks younger then these 2 are bigger then both of them. So maybe they are going to be smaller then a full size. But they are double the size of my little peanut.

So if he's a Bantam, does anyone want him? I really need to find the little guy a good home.

That was extremely helpful, but I just want to disinfect, so how much would I mix in a gallon size yard sprayer to spray out the coop and the run. And do I use the treatment drops in the water for the 3-5 drops per quart to have them drink it or is there a lesser dose just for regular care since non are sick with anything. Sorry, I'm just extremely nervous to use it, I just don't want to make them sick. I have the Oxine AH

For drinking it is 1/8 t per gallon if you don't have a dropper. I have been doing that for four weeks and they seem great so far.

I read somewhere 3/4 cup to a gallon for disinfecting but I have not tried it yet.
