Utah!

My Roos? I have two wheaten ameracaunas, sundance's boy is a frilkie/am cross I believe...he would make a good flock watcher and four marans boys. I just bought a bunch of chicks, hopefully I have fulfilled my rooster karma for the year

Sound like me, I've already re-homed 5, and still have one known one here. The one I just posted. I do have 4 Silkies that are 4 weeks old, those are bound to have a Roo in the mix, and then I have the 7 mystery rescued chicks from yesterday. And then I got 2 chicks from Spinx, and she's sure the one is a Roo, but I'm not seeing it yet,

that she says a girl, I love the coloring of that chick.

Please do... We rescued our first set of chicks out of a trash can, all Roos... Then after re-homing them, we got chicks from a Preschool hatching, so far 2 Roos, 2 Pullets, at least the other 2 are not looking like Roos yet. Of course we now have all the other straight run chicks that I got from people on here. HAHAHA, bound to have eggs sometime next year, Right?

My marans and bresse arrived today! Four bresse chicks and seven marans. So excited!!

In less exciting news, I found out today, via text, that my grandmother is in the terminal stage of pancreatic cancer. They say she has a week left. I feel all the worse because I haven't seen her in four years and can't say goodbye. I took the day off work to process a bit. Not sure if anyone is in SLC that wants any of the birds I have, but today looks to be a good day to pick them up. Many boys here, and two houdan pullets left. I have a meeting tonight, but before five thirty I am here.
Lil, so excited for your good news but sad for your bad. Life isn't fair sometimes. Hang in there!!

So put straw down in just the run area? Its 8 feet by almost 10 feet with the coop inside, and they can go under the coop too. I just didn't know what I could put in there to help with the smell, not sure if its because its wet. Because I cleaned out the coop on Sunday, and it didn't smell at all. I did buy Oxine, but I haven't used it yet, will that help with the smell if I spray it on the ground. I got busy, so I need to go read through to see how to mix it up.
Silly,
I do spray Oxine on the ground. It disinfects and kills the bacteria causing the odor. It causes a fresh smell so maybe it does help.

Where is the best place to buy straw? I use shavings in the coop, but thought I would put straw in the nest boxes when they are starting to lay. We have a while, the oldest is 8 weeks old. haha!

Do you Oxine? I need to figure out how to mix it to spray out the coop and the water dishes, and then how much to leave in the water, and can I spray the dirt in the run with it too?

I use hay. An old time chicken breeder told me about it. The chickens eat the hay as well and I put it in the nest boxes. Hay doesn't seem to be as soggy as straw

Personally i buy my straw from local growers. If i cant find one then i ask were it came from to make sure the money stays in the community. I buy my wood chips at the IFA in AF. They buy it from a local company in Lehi. In the fall you can find it sold by local FFA groups. Its great to buy it from the kids to help with their school programs. Call your local school and talk to the FFA programs.
