Utah!

My Roo's were born I think May 1st, and they started to try crowing at 11-12 weeks.  So good luck.

EEK don't tell me that lol

My Vinnie crowed a few times really early in the brooder, when we opened the garage and scared the daylights out of him, then not again for two months. Weird huh! I was glad though, it gave me time to decide whether or not I could keep him, after realizing really early that he was really a he!

Well mine were both quiet until I re-home the Delaware Roo, once he left it was like a show down to see who could crow first. hahaha, and the stupid Delaware was quiet, he hadn't started to crow yet, but I knew he was a Roo, so I figured not to feed him anymore.

Oh, Silly, they're so cute and fluffy!!!!!

My Internet is broken. Again. The cable is out of the ground and its totally severed. Awesome. So, so webcam until that's fixed. I have two pips and one chick that's about 3/4 out of the shell.

Well, my bresse eggs are in lock down (did I mention that my chicken woes started the day after I set these?). Out of 14 shipped eggs 11 made it to lock down. They are set to hatch on Sunday. In my poutty mode I was hoping none would hatch. Now I want them all to hatch. Fingers crossed! Hard thing is, I don't want to give them up! They are the cornerstone of what I wanted to accomplish with chickens: a truly sustainable meat and egg flock. Unlike other dual purpose breeds they are ready to process at 14-16 weeks and dress out to be large birds 4-5 lbs., and they are supposed to be *the* best eating birds in the world. My pullets are big girls and my boy was even bigger. So hard to have waited so long and not be able to continue. To my knowledge, my five and another two are the only ones of the breed in the state (I can't remember if anyone else on here has some?) Anyhow, potentially 11 more on Sunday. I don't get that kind of a hatch on shipped eggs, but...I really hope I do!

Hey there Utah folks! Wow, you've all been so busy! It took me quite awhile to get caught up on everyone's posts. It's been pretty quiet over here in Idaho....out here all by myself when all the fun is in Utah with all the chicken shows and drama. LOL

Anyway, I thought I'd toss this out there.....does anybody have a really good typey extra fluffy splash orpington roo or cockeral that needs a home? My efforts at shipped eggs this year has been a disaster. I'm not spending anymore money on shipped eggs this season. I would trade one of my blue orpington pullets for a roo that fits what I'm looking for. I've already traded for what was supposed to be a splash cockeral....but.....I think it's a pullet. "She" is a bit too narrow in the tail so appears at first glance to have sickle feathers but I don't see ANY saddle feathers and her comb is already red so I think it's a girl. I hope she widens out at least. Gah!!!

Hi Pawtraiart!!! I have one that turned lav splash that I purchased at Chickenstock from rfunnyfarms (Cathy). I think it's a roo, can't really tell quite yet. Acts like a roo. I was planning on keeping him and getting eggs in the spring..... so, if you're willing to wait, I should get some splashes from my crew. From Holly Loft only a couple hatched (inc and power probs), they are both blue; one looks roo-ish. From the poofy Orpington eggs on Ebay look like I have a black splash... don't know what it is yet.

OMG that babies are here, and they are so Loud!!!! Poor things, they are all over the place in there, I'm like just sit under your light and shut up! hehehe. All of them had their becks dipped in the water twice, and most practically went swimming right after I put them down, so I know they all had plenty of water, Most have eaten, and I was worried about those crumbles, but they seem to be doing just fine with them. Now what are they???? Most of them have feathered feet. I figured I would let them warm up and stop crying before I try looking at them upclose. I do have to say 32 chicks are a lot of chicks. Holy crap, I think I'm running down to get a long feeder this morning.

LOL.... been there, done that (actually do that every large hatch).

Yes, I found homes for both of them. The last one the lady who came to buy him, kept telling me that he was really a Pullet, and I kept telling her that HE was starting to CROW, and she kept telling me that was impossible. So I told her, I know he is a Rooster, so please know that I'm not taking him back once he starts really crowing at your house. I haven't heard from her, but she did pay the $15.00 that I was asking for him. I guess she will find out the hard way, but I tried telling her that he is starting to crow, cause I wanted her to know that I was 100% that he was a boy. She didn't want to believe me. Oh well.
I too have come across those individuals who are adamant on the gender. Picked up a 'hen' Russian Orloff for the neighbor, which the seller claimed was an 18 week old newly egg laying hen. The neighbor immediately recognized it as a rooster (egg on my face!!!

). Early the next morning it crowed. I contacted the seller who refused to believe it was a roo. She sent me back SOME of the money paid and on the note she stated, REFUND for the rooster HEN! OMGosh!!!

This reminded me of the opposite thing we came across---Sphinx and I went to a house to pick up a Cuckoo Marans roo for Blujems...it was semi-obvious girl, the guy said it had been crowing.....we told him it looked like a pullet to make sure he knew, he insisted it was a roo. It was indeed a female lol. That never happens ! He must have mistaken some chatting for some crowing.

OTOH, the animal control lady that was here mentioned that they were having a hard time figuring out what to do with a crowing hen. It was a sexlinks and an obvious girl, but for some reason decided it should crow and lay eggs.

How funny! I have heard they can do that--my Polish Gizmo was super loud and obnoxious but still one syllable yelling not the err-errr eeeeerrrr crow. Maybe you can tell animal control your hens are the "breed that crows"......:gig I sure hope your eggs hatch!

Hey good luck with your hatch. That sucks that you can't have roos.
