How did you get small quantities of seeds for your chicken "pasture" ?

I have some beautiful roosters I'm trying to get rid of; a bantam blue cochin, bantam white cochin, gold laced polish. I hope to find someone who is breeding and am happy to haggle a price.

I also have two silver lace wyandottes ($15 will be laying this month hatched in March) and three amerucana/easter egger ($10 should be laying sometime in August hatched just before Easter) hens I must sell.

Thanks

Where are you located? I'm toying with the idea of some EE's, but I'm already at the legal limit, so just trying to decide if I should go all outlaw on my municipality or not...

We are in the process of getting a better/bigger chicken run built and coop. In the mean time we have this temporary run and my husband was finishing up with chicken wire etc. Anyway we have this netting on top and on one side and it has a zipper for opening. Than we are going to put a tarp or wood on top to protect them better. They also have a dog house connected to the back they use for shelter. So my husband finally gets it done. Puts the chickens in last night. I go and check on them and find them all huddled in a wheel barrow. Silly chickens. They found one spot that wasn't secured and made a break for it. The whole thing we had also moved to a different part of the yard so it was all different to them. The wheel barrow was closer to the original spot.

Just had to share. Wished I had my camera. I fixed them up some perches and they are slowly getting familiar with their new temp home. Can't wait to have the coop and nice one built.

I'm in Rose Park

:Ok, couple questions if you don't mind...spent the wkend visiting in Vernal and hit Cal Ranch...my daughter's peep alarm went off and shot to the back of the store. My husband said next stop was a tatoo shop so get "STUPID" across his forhead. Long story short, we have two broody hens (one cochin (who's very VERY & Izzy) so we picked up 4 chicks. We've given them a day to re-coop from the long ride and they are doing great.

1. I've ready how to sneak them under a broody...but do you really need to do it in the middle of the night? They are such cute little buggers I don't want to lose them.

Oh, and these are going in with our 2-y/o hens. My last batch of "of chicks", which we still call the "The Chicks" are starting to lay. Yeah!!!

Also, they had a trough labeld white leghorns but they all had several black spots on their backs. I've never got a leghorn like that? So we got one of those, one that is a regular leghorn and two EE's.

2. What is white w/just a few black spots? really a white leghorn?

If I those hens don't take these chicks I think I'm going to need a new home (for me, my daughter and more chickens/4 chicks that I care to announce.).

Help???

sorry for typo's, bad night's sleep.

Edited to add one last question... I've been long out of chick feed and since planning on putting these peepers under a couple moms (pray pray), we've given them ground up layer feed, some teeny rocks/sand (since this stuff isn't predigested like chick starter, and some greens, knowing they'll get that outside). Do you think that'll tide them over?

When I first got them I thought I'll give it a try and then if it doesn't work and I lose them, not to big expense. WELL... didn't take the sucker in me to fall for them.

You might run into problems feeding the chicks Layer feed because that feed is too high in calcium for chicks--they can get problems. Scrambled eggs are good, well-rounded nutrition to tide chicks over in a tight spot so maybe that'd be helpful?? They are starting to sell small (5 lb) bags of chick starter in feed stores, so maybe you could get one of those? They are kind of pricey, but more economical than a 50-lb bag. Or possibly you have a nearby friend with chicks who can share overabundance from a 50-lb sack?
Good luck with the little peepers & best wishes for happy hen adoptions!

Thanks for the info!

I was actually going to scramble them a egg tonight but didn't realize the high calcium in layer feed - thank you! I'll also supplement with veggies/fruit, cottage cheese, flax seed, etc and giving them little bitty rocks/dirt to cover the grit issue.

How/what do chicks eat when they are with their moms running about on a farm? I'm pretty certain growing up and staying my friend's farm they didn't have chick feed set out. I just assumed they ate what mom ate (and we were going to provide some ground layena and lower the water & feed pens too. We're rural and the yard sprinklers run early morning so the girls can try to get worms.

I'm beginning beginning to think I made a major mistake in buying these peeps.

My husband will be so made if as I assured him I had two broodies that were SO wanting their own babies. dang dang dang

Anyone else on ideas on sneaking them under the broodies during the day? Their coop is dark and nest box even darker if that helps at all. Oh, and beside the lid on top of the next box, we have little doors so it'll be easy to swich an egg for a chick. I just want to be able to make sure they take to their moms and not get killed or booted out and chilled. I'm so pathetic, I'd never make being a REAL rancher.
