Thank you

How is everyone's chickens doing in this heat? I just read on another thread..that someone lost 16 chickens today! In VA. It was 105!

Tomorrow is supposed to be warmer than today. I've been going out and putting fresh water in their bowls and waters. I have them all over the place so they can get to water from where ever they are. So far so good!

I'm trying to keep the plants watered so they have a nice moist area to cool off in. I moved their pen to the side of the house where the trees shade it so it's much cooler. They free range and seem to find places to cool off at. Thankfully it's been low 90's here.

I've been filling the holes they dig each day with water, moving it around. They seem to cool off in the mud puddles. Its messy but better than dead chickens. If its super hot I've run a sprinkler adjacent to their run.

Oooh, good idea on the sprinkler...what kind of sprinkler? Explain how you are doing this?? Thanks! Tomorrow..Mon...is going to be close to 100 again...

i got my girls one of those portable misters at lowes and they love it. it was about $10 and is well worth it. in my lowes it is by the patio stuff. i have a box fan in the coop facing the roost. i spray the run down too so it cools the earth. my coop is also on the north side of the house so that helps too. i did do black shingles for the coop so that kinda sucks in the summer but it is good in the winter. but you all should look into the misters because it does cool the area down a lot and i feel for the price it is well worth it

Sounds great...we have a Lowes near us..we are in Spanish Fork, it's in Orem. So, will have to think how we will arrange that. I also wet down the coop ground, but they are pretty much staying under our apples trees in the back yard.
There is just dirt there, and I have water bowls for them every where.
Another hot today coming.

Its just the row of automatic lawn sprinklers that are on a timer. If its hot I run it in the afternoon too. Home Depot has had misters too - some of the chickens will stand under it - some avoid it, but it lowers the temp some.

Anybody want some chicks? They are living outside and are really active. My aunt's giving me a hard time because I have so many animals so please email me if you want some! I'm sure we can make a good deal!

Something I did recently was use a spray bottle to spray some water on the bare skin under their wings. This I'm assuming would help chickens keep cool via evaporation when they hold hold their wings out to the side like they do when really hot.

However, this would be a work-intensive effort. If you have a small number of chickens or a couple that are particularly overheated, it may be of help, though.

I happened to be handling a couple chickens on a hot day & they got a bit extra-stressed, so I gave them a cooling few sprays before I put them back in their coop.
