i've considered hooking up a mister, similar to the ones at home depot, for the really hot days. my birds seem to like it when i turn the spray nozzle to mist and and leave it running.

Ahh, now that's a good idea too. Even with the little rain we got yesterday, my birds were still warm. Haven't made it to Lowes yet..so I did as someone here suggested, or said they do..and I really soaked the ground where they like to lay and/or dust bathe. Best check it, it's probably dry now. Not as much panting today as yesterday. It's cloudy here, heard a small bit of thunder, then it was gone, just sprinkles. I don't know how my RIR is doing it, but that gal has laid an egg for four days in a row with this heat. In her fav. nest box.

i tried a soaker hose on the ground yesterday and came back to find multiple holes scratched in the ground where it got wet. it looked like the went foraging and then laid down for a while. they must like that too.

Hey, now I've got a soaker hose! I was thinking about using that. They didn't scratch at the hose did they? Just the ground? That sounds like something I will do tomorrow..even if rain is expected in the afternoon, still hot in the day. Thanks for posting!

no, just scratched around it and put their beaks to the hose to drink. they always seem to come running when i have the hose so they can drink where the water pools. they have plenty of fresh water inside the coop but i guess it's hot in there or they just don't want to go back in when their out in the yard.

Wow, don't need the water now! Did anyone else get that huge thunderstorm?? We have some serious water out there..from our driveway to the middle of the street! It dumped, it thundered, then the t.v. came on and warned us once it was all over.

They said that if you can hear thunder, you are in danger of being struck. hmmmm.....

Wondering if anyone can help me out. I recently had a dog "incident" and should be getting court appointed restitution for 8 hens sometime in August. I was hoping I could find some Utah chicken people to purchase replacement hens from. My girls were French Cooper Black Marans that I hatched myself so I'd love to find some of them but I'm not going to be too picky. Pullets or hens who are at the point of laying would be best.

I know I can always try and hatch again and am not terribly opposed to that option, but that's a long time to wait for eggs and my girls had just started laying when we lost them. It took a lot of work to get to that point but reality is what it is.

Thanks and let me know if you have any ideas.

Alan.
