Utah!

A pictures from the state fair. My white Serama pullet was awarded best Serama out of 10 Serama and Reserve best single comb clean leg for the whole show. The judge made a point to find me and tell me that she was the best Serama he had ever seen and didn't expect to see a Serama that good in utah, Apparently that was a big deal all the show people were very impressed. The judge was from

Texas

Congrats!!

well its the season for molting. seems my welsummer lost half her feathers overnight. i feel bad for her. but at least she is doing when its not cold. she is always one of the first to molt. on a side note she has spurs and sharp ones too, glad she is a sweet girl as those things would do a lot of damage

Hi Brad. Yes, good thing she is doing this early. Hopefully she will have those feathers back by the time it's starts getting cool. It's supposed to get back up to around 87 by this weekend. I can handle the 80's a little while longer. :)

Congratulations Diane! Your white serama is very pretty. And that white fizzle..looks like what mine is going to look like, must be related. ;)

Congratulations, Sundance! Very pretty girl :) I wish so bad I could have come to see your birds at the Fair. I love seeing all of the bantams and the HUGE roosters.

Birdman, your poor girl, lol. I've got a few moulters rift now that are looking haggard. I'm wondering if I'll need to knit a sweater for my BR, since she's taking her sweet time. Poor girl.

I had three birds over the fence this morning, two of which were in the neighbor's yard. Guess who got to slither across the chain link with a net? Fun times.

moulting is no fun. I'm sure everyone thats been over here remembers my poor bald frizzled Americana. She was a pretty big chicken and very very blad. I put her in a coop and started feeding her a food called feather fixer All her feather are starting to come in nicely. So glad. She would have died without it as she was very bald and would have frozen now its getting colder. I am amazed at how well that product worked. Cal ranch says they sell it a lot. One other thing. If you join the Utah fancy poultry assn IFA will give you a 10% discoun on foodt. Its a great way to say some money membership is $25.00

Does anyone know when to havest sunflower heads? I have read to let them turn brown but if i do this then all the stupid birds will have ate all the seeds. All the petals have fallen or dried up and the back of the heads are starting to turn yellow and brown on the edges. Is there anything i can cover them with besides a paper bag since i use a sprinkler head on my garden. Would a chicken feed bag work or would this keep the head moist. The bags are polypropylene feed bags.

Last year we raised some bobwhite quail. They were raised with the chickens and stayed a while but eventually flew away. We have seen quail around the neighborhood and a mom with about 10 babies. Today I went out to the coop and much to my surprise it was full of quail happily eating off the floor 2 parents and a bunch of babies. The babies freaked out and ran away but the adults flew up in the rafters where they use to roost and just looked at me like they were saying hi we're home whats for dinner? it was nice to see them.
