Utah!

Congratulations, Sundance! Very pretty girl

I wish so bad I could have come to see your birds at the Fair. I love seeing all of the bantams and the HUGE roosters.

Birdman, your poor girl, lol. I've got a few moulters rift now that are looking haggard. I'm wondering if I'll need to knit a sweater for my BR, since she's taking her sweet time. Poor girl.

I had three birds over the fence this morning, two of which were in the neighbor's yard. Guess who got to slither across the chain link with a net? Fun times.

There is a huge white turkey at the fair that needs a new home. He is very sweet and really good with kids and chickens, He was funny the kids would gobble at him and he would gobble back at him. I was surprised to see a for sale sign on him when I picked up my chickens today

Gary, I've cut the heads off several of my sunflowers and brought them inside to dry. You can hang them upside down for a couple of weeks, but if you set them on a shelf, I found you should put them face up. Otherwise, the seeds mold. When the seeds start getting dry enough that you can pull them off the head easily, I've been plucking them and setting them on a cookie sheet for a few days to dry. Hope that helps.

Sundance, funny story about the quail. We have some out here, but they're scarce. I think the cats pick them off, especially the babies. So sad, because I love quail.

Sundance, love the quail story. I miss mine :(

Red...there is a guy up here by me that has Black Bourbon and Royal PalmTurkeys. Diana's post reminded me, I meant to tell you last week, he came to buy my quail. He said they have pretty much quit laying but would be glad to give me some eggs for you in the Spring if you are still looking. I might forget by then so remind me if you are interested. He also has red and yellow golden pheasant, Lady amherst pheasant, and guineas... if anyone is interested in the Spring I kept his name and info. I am thinking of trying some of the Red/Yellow Golden pheasants ;D

:( I miss my white turkeys. Wish I had room for him. And I hope he goes to a good home. If I had my way, I'd take home every animal that needed a home.

Hey all!
Fun to see your fair pictures, Sundance!

Two great newses! :)

1: Justin, Dawn's neighbor who had coons take all but one chicken, came over last night and took two of my WA crosses. I hope they like their new home! :) (Dawn, I forgot to tell him to read some flock integration articles from here. Would you mind?)

2: Lisa gave me eggs exactly two weeks ago. Well, my broody decided to stop being broody, so I didn't give her eggs. Well, Wednesday I saw her sitting in the box again... so I hurried and threw the eggs in there! She's been on them for two days (although I have seen her off of them occasionally.)

Hopefully she's a dedicated mom!

Happy fall! :)

So fun! I'm going to have a go at breeding probably next spring and I'm excited. When do silkie hens start being broody? My oldest is somewhere around 9-10mths and I have seen her interested in her eggs and rolling them under her, ect but she still comes out during the day with the others which I suspect wouldn't be ideal for incubating eggs. If she were truly broody would that mean she'd want to be sitting all day and barely ever come out? Also when can a silkie roo begin breeding?

So the hubby finally said I could breed and sell my own silkies if I want to, so I am going to be breeding for Splash and paints probably next spring so I am looking for good quality birds for breeding :) It's going to be my first time so im excited. I am going to let the mothers incubate them. I may order some eggs and let the broodys hatch them when they are ready if I cannot find some in Utah. I currently have a nice quality splash to use, and one paint that's gender is still unknown. If anyone has a good quality splash, or nice looking paints either gender, let me know :)

Gary, mine aren't quite dark yet, but I think I will cut one off, and throw it out to the girls. They just pick at it. They love it.
They are pretty heavy, those heads are leaning half way over to the ground, to the middle of the stem.

Hey Ace! I'll run over in the morning and check on your girls but I've got to tell you they went to a great home. Justin has a chicken palace so nice that even the goat crawls in and sleeps in it :p And its quite a sight when he takes is dog, his goat, and his chicken for a walk... So incredibly cute!

Second, here's hoping the broody hen does her job! My fingers are crossed for you.

What kind of sunflowers are you guys growing? I tried the Mammoth Russians this year. Love 'em.
