Utah!

aww, he makes cute babies! Will watch for more photos. Whites ey? Saw that you were hoping for some whites.

Ok Utah people I have a problem!!!!!

My step dad lives in the middle of nowhere down here. Drive 15 minutes into the desert and you're about half way lol. Anywho there's a ranch type thing a bout 5 minutes or so before his property. No house just a few horses and cows that range on the pastures. There's a covered barn for both cows and horses. There are also a bunch of extremely ragged chickens running around with a few rooster that match their ragged look if not worse. They are just a barnyard mix, having been running around that property breeding and growing for years and years and years.

Well today I was driving and I saw a rooster caught up in some rubber fencing stuff. His claw things were all tangled in it. I went to his aide and got him loose but now when he walks one leg sort of gives out half way through and he tumbles to one side. I looked him over and there's no obvious breaks and besides having horrible scaly feet and crazy long claw things his legs and feet look normal.

I brought him home and he's in a make shift hospital right now but I don't know if I should try to bring him back to health or cull him and put him out of his misery. It really doesn't seem like his leg is that bad. A little R&R may help it, but the rest of him is in rough shape.

He's just been sleeping pretty much since I got him here 2 hours ago. I don't think he got in the coop last night. His comb was blackened but it's red now mostly except in a few spots.

He's got a total of 3 tail feathers.

He's missing a lot of feathers and must have been getting picked on because he's covered in scabs. This is the worst of them in the picture below.

You can see some blackened spots on his cob but when I picked him up about half of it was black. . . .

He started drinking some water a minute ago but hasn't touched the food yet.

Any advice or recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

My step dad and I did get his claws trimmed up so they are only about 2 inches. We measured the other claws and they are over 5 inchess long and one that was over 6!

Wooooow Sambi :( That poor thing has been neglected. Do you have any bag balm on hand? I use that on my birds when their combs or wattles get really dry and have frost bite. I would try neosporin in his scabs and see if that helps, too.

Does he have any bugs? He could have a bad case of lice or mites that are adding to the problem. I would try the R&R for a few days and see if his leg improves. Poor boy. He looks like he'd be really pretty if he were all healthy.

He must have mites or lice I saw a bug on him when I lifted his wings. My girls don't have any pests and I would like to get them gone asap . . . . Advice? I have some balm I could slather his comb with and I've given him some probiotics and some vitamins. He seems to be improving.

Neglected isn't the word. They are totally wild. I'm not sure who owns that property and I hope they don't mind that I stole their rooster but I couldn't stand by and let it die like that.

haha yes I did:) he is so pretty. I need to find rooster collars for a large fowl and one big enough for a silkie rooster. I hope your hatching goes better then planned:) just keep me posted on how your hatches go.
I think he is going to be tall as well. He's 15 weeks old and towers over my other chick's that are older then he is lol. I can't wait to see what he fills out like.
Oh just checked the calender and he actually turned 14 weeks old yesterday. Easy birthday to remember.. He was hatched on thanksgiving. I put this pic together of him at 3 days old. Thought you might want it :)

Wow, that poor guy! I have never had to deal with pests with my chickens, but I have read diatomacious earth works wonders. Also, per his wounds, coconut oil has some amazing healing and antiseptic qualities. It is very soothing on wounds. Good luck, and bless you for taking care of that poor guy!
