Utah!

I have noticed that when I check on her. She kind of makes this deep throated cluck is the best way to describe it. She only makes that noise when she is broody, and away from the nest. I have been using our wire dog kennel over a wire window well cover. It has been working pretty well.

Okay, Thanks for you help to the both of you! I will let you know how it goes.
I know some people suggest putting them in water just up over their back. Not too cold just cool water and holding them in there for 5 min. It sounds rough, but I saw a guy on youtube do it and he hen didn't even seem to care. I only have pullets right now so I'm not sure what I will do when my SLWs go broody.

so i know we have a forum for this but wanted to ask you all because i trust your judgement more. this bird is a black austrlorp and is just over 12 weeks. what do you think, boy or girl? i dont think my mind is in the right place to judge because i am attached to it.

and cynthia here is the silver pencil rock i got from you. she has been broody for over a month so is a little rough looking but i still think she is beautiful. thought you would like to see how she turned out

I don't have experience with them, but those wattles are pretty small for 12 weeks. I would lean towards pullet.

Yesterday since they were so hot and uncomfortable and panting I put each of the flock in turn in the dogs kiddie pool for a minute to wet their underside. No trauma and they all seemed so much more comfortable for the next hour or so.

thanks for your opinion. :)

Our 2nd hatch. 11 days left. I'm a little bummed that we don't have any of Lisa's cute little silkies in this hatch! We can't see what's happening in these eggs like we could with those. It made it so exciting! Lol.

That teeny tiny little thing is a dud I think. It was just found out in middle of a chicken field. My aunt said that when she gets these from her hens that there's not usually a yolk inside. Anyone on here gotten one so tiny before?

I've had more than one fart egg with an itty bitty yoke :)

I'm under the general impression you can not trust Cal Ranch. Hopefully my Australorps from them turn out to be girls. Considering all the hassle I've gotten doing business with them, I won't be purchasing from them again. In fact, we're pretty sure over here that we'll just be buying hatching eggs from now on, just hoping one of our chickens makes a good mother (like that cochin I hope is a girl!!!).

If you hadn't already gotten some more from there I would have recommended seeing if Desert Springs had any Ameraucanas left. I just checked their FB page and they'd posted they were reducing prices on the chicks to get them out of there.

EDIT: Me and typing today! I read back through my posts and key words or letters are just missing. Bah!

The Cal Ranch in Tooele is good, but they usually have basic utility breeds and the Cornish X, is all.

Grabbed a paver block and put it in there with them... They all ran to one side of the pen and chirped in alarm. *facepalm* Seriously chickens it's a rock.

Haha!

I miss my RIR :( She was so chatty and friendly. Does anyone here have experience with other breeds like that? Any recommendations? Most of my chickens now are so quiet and standoffish.

I'm headed up to Logan this weekend from Herriman with the wife for some RnR. Anyone need a chicken train, I could meet off of an I15 exit?

Also, what should we do and where should we eat up there? Wife is expecting so we can't do anything to strenuous.

get a welsummer. mine is the most chatty and friendly girl ever, so much that her name is chatty cathy lol. she lays big eggs that have spots in them. by far one of my favorite breeds. and this girl has a massive set of spurs lol.

I just got back from Fazzio's Egg farm. Their eggs have almost TRIPLED since I bought eggs a month ago. They are Blaming the Bird Flu. My ducks wont be laying for at least another month.

I need to find eggs.
I Found eggs from a wonderful gal in Magna, she is only charging 250 per dozen, but I gave her a bit more and some cartons. Hoping to keep that arrangement up till fall when my babies should be laying regularly. Thanks Elizabeth!
Also My 16 week old Pekin started laying on my Birthday!!! I got 3 eggs in a row, but none today. They are still quite small yet. I know they will get bigger. Im so very excited! Did anyone else on here feel unusually happy when their chickens or ducks first started laying? I feel like I got an A in Biology or something. Like it was my own accomplishment. LOL

the brownish one in this pic is one of Elizabeths chicken eggs.

THEY WERE DELICIOUS FRIED

I just found out that the gold in my Golden Cuckoo Marans is a sexlinked trait.

If I put a BCM roo over a GCM pullet I know the males will be barred and females BCM, so do I assume the males would be gold as well as barred?

Ok, just putting out some feelers. Is anyone here interested in an Icelandic breeding trio?

Thanks! Although I think it goes without saying that all of your hens would be sweet, with how good you are to them :) I will keep Welsummer in mind, though. My mom has one and she's quite shy, but she gives beautiful eggs.

Yahoo!! Congrats on the new layer! :D I love it when my turkeys are laying. Turkey eggs are my personal delicacy, and I think they've about stopped for the year. Pooh. But yes, I was crazy excited when my girls started laying.

If we were allowed to have roosters I'd be all over this.
Sadly, no roosters here in our city and I have a police officer across the street that would probably notice.

I really hope someone takes your trio. I think it'll be pretty hard to come by local Icelandic chicks in the future and they seem like a really hardy breed.
