Utah!

Thank you again! I'm so glad I found BYC. I've learned so much. Raising chickens for the first time and being a part of this community has been a great experience so far.

Glad you are here.

Hi all I haven't been around much I've been busy taking care of my birthday present a beautiful horse named Tucker.  I still have some seramas for sale.  This weather is hard on all the chickens.  One of my Seranas had a severe eye infection  Never seen it in a chicken.  Looked like what the kittens get big bulgy and full of puss. I brought her in the house and put some eye ointment in her eye.  The other two chickens in the cage with her are fine so I'm thinking its probably and injury of some sort.  Hope everyone is enjoying their summer

Glad to hear you are enjoying the new present :) And Happy Birthday! What kind of horse?

Hello! I live in Holladay and I am wondering if there are any local businesses that sell chicken feed? I had an experience at IFA that kind of bothered me, and I would prefer to buy somewhere else (and local) if possible.

This reminds me of an experience I had recently at the Cal Ranch out here. It's the only time I've had any kind of problem with them, and they stepped on it quick. I had to get some game bird feed to finish out our meat chicks (I don't really like the hormones in all the grower and finisher foods) and the guy on the walkie talkie who was *supposed* to be getting a bag of feed for me kept trying to tell the cashier what he figured I should get. After a minute of this, the manager jumped in on the conversation and said, "Kyle, can you get that for her?"

"Kyle" quit chatting and got me the feed. It was kind of funny how he thought he knew what I really wanted. I think some people are just trying to be helpful and unintentionally come across as a heel.

I agree. I'm just glad that I wasn't completely oblivious and listen to the lady at IFA who told me to feed my 8 week old girls and 2 boys layer mash. I talked to the manager on the phone and he seemed frustrated that someone told me that. He said they are getting grower in today, so I may try theirs or just go to cal-ranch.

This heat has been tough. My pullets are due to start laying any day now. Anyone having a slow down in egg production from the heat?

Thank you so much! I really appreciate that info. I'm a first timer, so I wasn't sure where else to go. IFA told me to feed my 8 week old girls layer mash...and it just didn't seem right to me. You'd think the folks at IFA would know better than I do, but I guess not.
I think grower has more protein for the growing chicks. Layer mash would be "fine", but it's not optimal. I talked to a guy at a feed mill and he said he has a lot of chicken farmers that raise their meat chickens and layers from egg to adult on layer mash and they do really well. Again, it's not optimal, but imagine the space and money saved for a farmer. The calcium in layer mash is also not good for the liver of a growing chick, but where I get my feed they don't add calcium so it's not a problem. I just give the ladies free choice calcium.

Welcome!

MY new horse is a registered appaloosa show horse. He is stunning and I am enjoying him. Hes small so I can get on and off more easily with my old bones. Hes white with a little varnish marks on his head and legs. I'll post pictures when I figure out how to get them on my new computer. hes great and very sweet. At the moment he is a bit lost as he has lived in the same stall his whole life and now hes living somewhere else with a new human. The barn where I am feeds twice a day cleans the stalls waters. All I have to do is show up and enjoy the horse He is really good for my physical Therapy

Sundance, that's great! My hubby loves the Appaloosas, too. His horse is half Appy. They have such quirky personalities :)

SideWing, I couldn't tell ya if my girls have slowed down or not. They keep hiding nests from me

I have this fear that my girls will start laying and I won't know if because they are hidden. I just opened up their nest boxes last night and put fresh straw in them.

My autosexing EE project eggs went into lockdown last night. 14 shipped eggs from 1300 miles away and they all look good at lockdown. I hope we get more than 50% from shipped eggs. I would be over the moon.
