Utah!

I'll post photos later. Or tomorrow, when the last one gets out. Pretty sure it's white. Will be interesting what the body type will look like on the whites.

Lisa, bet ya can't guess what kind of eggs I have on the way.

I have:
1 gold sexlink
1 barred rock
1 very broody hatchery silkie (may re home if the Cochin turns out to be a good broody)
1 hatchery bantam Cochin
2 Easter eggers hatched this spring (only keeping one, but waiting to see who lays best...or at all)
And a bunch of silkie / frizzle eggs under both broodies and in the incubator

Wish list (for that happy day when I can own unlimited chickens):
Cream legbars
A silkie fluffy enough you can't tell the front from the back :)
A show girl

So this is my rooster I am waffling back and forth about getting rid of.

He just tidbitted his first worm for one of the new girls today, it was so adorable that she qued in and took him up on it. A good reward for him that someone came and took it instead of chasing him off it.

NewMarch,

That is a fine looking bird… my vote is to keep that one. Is he gentle or is the breed like RIR's a tad on the mean side? I just love the interaction between a fine rooster and his ladies. I do so enjoy watching mine, time well spent.

Best to you and your birds,

RJ

He is actually pretty nice, afraid of me and the older hens. He is pretty gentle except for bumbling around learning the ropes. He has bruised and plucked the top of my favorite hens head using it as a handle as he gets the hang of mounting her. The RIR's have broken wing feathers from him. My formerly pristine and impressively feathered hens look like they were run through a shredder.

My RIR's haven't been mean.

I just hatched a bunch, because I want younger ones in my flock next spring.

Even did the bumble foot surgery without a peck. I called these two twins..they had bumble foot on opposite feet. They did well. Bandages off in no time.

I would love to see some pics. I want to add a fan to my DIY bator and test it out, but I'm overflowing with chickens right now. Is it possible to sell barnyard mix chicks right now? Or even pure SLW?

Here are some photos of the babies, more to come. The black ones sure look a lot like Black Marans. The white one like a leghorn. :D

This is dad..one of the mom's by him. Very young, still a lot of growing to do, but did breed these girls.

With all I've read about mean roosters tearing the girls up, I guess I should be very grateful for my guy. He's young but all of my current layers aren't missing a feather and all of the eggs of theirs that we put in the incubator are developing nicely so far. These gals just started laying about a month ago so I wasn't sure what to expect. Seems to be going well though! I had planned to replace my EE guy with something pure like a Ameraucana (but my little Ameraucana it turns out, is not an Ameraucana) or a FBCM. Maybe j just won't mess up a good thing for now though. Nice to the ladies and the humans - can't beat that right?
