Utah!

Birdman, I think I have had birds do that. I know at least one of my turkeys hens is in molt, and she's less than a year old, I think.

Aravis, congrats!

salt lake IFA has all chicks on sale 2.00 each clearing out the last for this year. they still have alot to choose from.I picked up a few for my mama that lost her babies she adopted them just fine.she is so happy again

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I think I will try to sterilize a needle and poke to see what comes out. If it's pus filled, are antibiotics warranted? If so, is there a specific (or at least broad spectrum) type for chickens I can pick up from IFA or the likes?

On a happier note, we ordered a custom built coop that should be coming in this evening. Our A-frame coop has been working fine but the run portion is very difficult to keep clean as you have to crawl inside on your hands and knees - not fun on the back nor pleasant to come out only to find your pants covered in poo :p

Yay, one of my Easter eggers finally laid a light blue egg. 24 weeks to the day.

The egg (along with the eggs from my gold sex link and barred rock):
400

The culprits (I think it was the one in the back):
400

I heard her in the egg box, then I turned around and she had layed in the middle of the wet run.

Yesterday, when I went to check on my "lumpy" hen, I noticed that the "scab" was already pulled back a bit so I took a closer look and saw what I thought was a splinter or something in the middle. Thinking this was the cause of the lump, I pulled the scab back only to discover that what I saw was simply the base (quill?) of a feather. Oops! Underneath the wound bed was wet and red, I still poked where I thought perhaps a pustule was, but no pus, barely even serous fluid. Washed with saline then applied triple antibiotic ointment to it. I've checked on it several times and repeated the saline and ointment. She still seems alert, eating and drinking well but the bump doesn't appear to be any smaller. Guess I will just watch her some more for any changes. Wishing I hadn't pulled back the scab in the first place as I just left her vulnerable to infection :(

Good news though! New coop is in and much better suited to chicken keeping than our first one. The girls love it so far, as do I!

tfleuter it may have just been that the feather you saw got a little ingrown in the beginning. I know it is expensive But vetericyn is nice for this type of application as it is more viscous and helps to coat and keep the wound moist.
