Utah!

Yeah DH wants eggs and all our girls are on winter hiatus.

We lost another meat bird today, but it was to the cold. We think he was sick. DH found him stuck in the snow and half frozen. We tried to put him under a light but he didn't make it. I'm sad because he was DH's favorite. What a rotten day.
You're just having terrible luck. Hopefully things turn around for you as the holidays draw nearer.
I would send you good luck if I had any.

Same thing is happening here. My wife's appreciation for the birds is diminishing quickly when we are buying eggs and feed for the chickens.

The woes of winter. I had hoped that ours might lay through the winter since I've read they might do that their first year, but they're stubborn and so am I (I refuse to put electricity in that coop!).
It's understandable that they are upset about the no eggs though. My sister buys the girls organic, corn free layer feed, and it is very expensive on its own (not to mention shipping).

I've only got 2 laying right now, a golden sex link and my Easter egger. It's ok because we don't use all that many eggs. We get about 9 eggs a week between the two of them. My barred Rock has decided this is the perfect time to slowly molt. My Cochin was taking care of chicks at the start of fall, so I'm not expecting anything til Spring. Her chicks will probably start laying then unless they start crowing ;)

My husband arranged the eggs we've gotten so they made alternating vertical stripes of green and brown in the carton. Now I feel honor bound to continue the pattern. Hope the chickens keep cooperating :)

I do not heat my coop. :)
oh i am very interested then. been wanting one for a long time lol. but i am not sure i can make it happen until the new year. will have to see what i can do. when do you need her gone? edit i just reread your post. just let me know when you are going to sell her and i will almost certainly buy her :)

I'm great for whenever you're ready. I'm just getting eggs out of her until then. :)

perfect! So glad I am able to help out someone else's wish list, as someone is helping me out with mine!

I am too lazy to go back and tag people this morning. To the newbie that is thinking about chickens.......I have heard great things about black sex links. The people I know that have them say they are very sweet and easy to socialize and great for a first time family with a small backyard operation. I have never had them though so if I were to comment on my own experience I love Orpingtons. My Buff Orpingtons are my favorite chickens and I want to get a couple Blue Orps to add to the flock as well. They get a little hot in our summers but I provide them with ice water and watermelon and they do ok. They handle the cold pretty well though I do heat the coop at night when it is lower than 18 degrees. Easter Eggers are fun (sold at the feed store as Americaunas or other spelling similar) and do well in both heat and cold and lay like troopers but mine are pretty skittish so they would need some good gentle socialization for good 'pet' type birds.

To the people with their chickens on egg strike. Hang in there! I thought my older girls were done for the winter and 3 of them are getting back to laying pretty frequently.

To Everyone else, Happy Holidays but bah humbug to this nasty white stuff that keeps falling.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I would love some Buff Orpingtons, I would just hate to have to re-home a roo. We are hoping to get some chicks about February. The closest place to us with a large selection is the Ogden IFA. Does anyone have any experience with them?
