Utah!

Lucky you, two eggs at once. That has never happened for me.

Speaking of failure to thrive..Red, my cute little black is giving up! It is so much smaller than the silkies that just hatched. It was doing so well for a while, even better after you saw her. I am so sad. I can tell she isn't going to make it. I guess I just can't feed her enough, I even give her some egg every other day. I have now noticed, that the ones that come as really small babies from a pullet egg, just don't make it. Arrggh! Wish they wouldn't send such tiny eggs..even the Silkie eggs will come with extra tiny eggs. The babies do well for a while, then don't make it. :(

What? Nooooo!

That little baby was so sweet. I couldn't help but giggle when I saw how tiny it was. I'm sorry, Cynthia.

Well, while that does make me sad about the little silkie, I can add to Lisa's good news that not all of the teeny babies die. Lisa, do you remember how small Angel was? She is doing so good! She is by far the fluffiest little pullet I have, and still the sweetest one, too. She and Steve are pretty mild. Angel will walk right up to you and let you hold her, no fuss. Cynthia, that BO/EE I got from you, Thelma, does the same thing now. She's made such good progress with being handled, I'm so proud of my babies!

Sphinx, pretty girls there. I was going to say last night and forgot: The thistles we get in our yard are a different kind. They're the darker green ones that spread horizontally, rather than vertically. I've seen the ones you're refering to, though. I encounter those occasionally along the ditch bank where I get my irrigation water, and while I like the flowers, I hate the thorns. I stomp those things down and pulp them, when I can. I'll have to grab one some time and throw it in the run to see what my girls do with it, then I'll let you know.

And I'm lovin' those chick and duckling pictures, you guys

For crying out loud. I get that whole post typed up, and then I remember something else I was going to comment on. I tell you, if my head wasn't attached............bah.

I wasn't aware that there is a way to decrow roosters without caponizing them. Either way, I wouldn't want to put any of my boys through that. I've read that the mortality rate is awfully high, and I'd much rather have to rehome a rooster or send him to freezer camp than put him through that. Not to mention, it sounds quite expensive. That's just me, though.

If someone managed to breed a rooster that didn't crow, I wouldn't be surprised if any pullets from the same hatch would no longer lay eggs

Or something. We would have a race of genderless chickens!! They'd be like androids.........................

*cough* Okay, sorry. I'll stop going off on that tangent.

Ugh, I am so stinking mad right now. I just found out that someone stole my truck while I was at work. I had lumber, a nail gun, and an air compressor loaded in the back, too. That stuff was for building another chick run! Some people make me so mad

oh my gosh, your truck got stolen?! Did you leave your keys in it?! I just never hear about cars getting stolen nowadays. I hope that it turns up soon, and all the tools are still in it. Describe it and we'll be on the look out for it.

As a side story, our truck has a rebuilt title on it because it was stolen from the previous owners, and insurance paid out before the truck was recovered. It was found a few weeks later, in perfectly good shape, but because insurance declared it a total loss (literally), law said it has to be a salvage title.

Decrowing a rooster and caponizing are not the same thing..  Decrowing still leaves him intact and able to breed..ie you would have hatchable eggs from any hens with him.  Mahonri in Phoenix tried one last year.. if I remember right it was $7-800 and the rooster did not survive the operation..

Caponizing is neutering.. It is usually done with young chicks so that they grow faster, more tender etc.. just like they do with pigs and cattle..  here's a video  http://www.56.com/u59/v_MjUzNDM2OTY.html

A caponized rooster probably wouldn't crow but also wouldn't really be a rooster as he has been castrated.. they are actually called Capons and are raised for meat.  Some grocery stores here in the US even carry them but it is more common overseas.
wow! well thanks for the info :) i thought capons was the only way to stop the crowing but hey its cool they can do the vocal cords. i would not do it myself but its cool that others have that option :)

Thanks, me too. It's insured, and I don't think the keys were left in it (I don't think so, anyway) It was parked in my boyfriend's back yard, and by the footprint in the dirt near it, it was some big lug that stole it. They'd better not trash it. I'm just sick over this. It's a tan Toyota Tacoma, year is '06. It's kind of a custom one, too. On one side of the bed, there's what looks like a covered electrical outlet. Off road package, no intake vent on the hood like some have. Had the back loaded up with 2x4's, plywood, an air compressor, a nail gun, a circular saw, and a square for woodworking. UGH.

Side note - Since I live in West Valley, I do still hear about cars getting stolen around here. It's not terribly often, but it happens. We've got all of the fun stuff around here like tagging, shootings, robberies, burglaries, vandalism....................and wouldn't ya know, but that dang truck got stolen in Tooele, not good ol' Crime Central.
