Utah!

So much going on here! Red that is terrible about your truck! I hope they get who ever took it and you get everything back. Seriously had to have been such a shock.

Daloorashens you are getting all kinds of cute chicks! I loved seeing the ones I brought you. They have grown so much and they are beautiful!

Cynthia you sold all of your chicks! Even the cute little brown EE. :( I hope you sold it to someone who will send you pictures of that one as it grows. I was wanting to see how it's coloring turned out. Are you loving your new incubator? My husband has been really sick this week too. I'm hoping I don't get what he has. There is something going around that isn't any fun and I think it has been turning into bronchitis.

T-Rex sorry about your roo. I used to have a EE that was always pulling feathers from my Polish. It is amazing how fast their head feathers grow back in. Did you ever decide what happened to him?

Lisa sad about your eggs and the sad things happening. :( I'll be looking forward to cute chick pictures though. I was wondering if you or anyone else had seen this? http://www.motherearthnews.com/sustainable-farming/buying-fertilized-chicken-eggs-zmaz74zhol.aspx

My comment on all the rooster crowing stuff....I don' t want to stop a rooster from cock a doodle doing in order to have a rooster. I just need to move to where I can have one. Sphinx come sell my house for me so I can have a rooster.;) please

Sundance good luck on your first hatch! You are so going to be addicted. :D

Question:

I am in process of building our first coop (5"L x 3'W x 3'T).. I building it all out of 2x4's.. but because of budget constraints, I am having to use OSB for the walls and roof. I am going to shingle the roof. But I am concerned about the walls. How long do you think I will be able to go without adding siding to the coop? Can i put a good coat of exterior paint on the outside walls? Do you think that will last?

I am open to suggestions. Or if anyone has some other materials they could maybe donate to me to cover the outside.. ( i know that is asking a lot.)
My next door neighbor has OSB sided coops that are still unpainted. I know they have been that way since at least last year but not sure exactly as i haven't lived here that long. They are a little discolored but still look sound. So you should be good for a while.

Our first chicken tractor is OSB board. We did shingle the roof, but the sides are just OSB. We put a good coat of outdoor paint on it, and it's held up really well. It's 4 years old now, I think? I believe the paint is really what's held it together. Here's a picture of it.

Pointy eggs=cockerel and round eggs= pullet? I don't believe so. From what I've seen different hens lay differently shaped eggs. So one hen may tend to always lay pointy eggs, but not all of her offspring will be cockerels.

Hattie, Sure, I'll sell your house and we'll find you a nice place in the country and get you some roosters.

I put my first incubator eggs in lockdown this morning, Apparenly I should have done this yesterday, 21 days is Sunday. I am a nervous Nellie. You will think I'm wierd but I talk to the eggs and tell them what a good life they will have on the outside, I raised the humidity to 70% went to radio shack and bought a better thermostat and humidity measure. I bought some cupcake papers and put the eggs individually in each one. I saw that on another forum and liked the idea to keep messes confined. So I am ready. Lets hope I didn't mess things up too bad and can have at least a few babies hatch. These are the sizzles and mystery eggs that turned out to be polish frizzles. I was late getting them set due to my hand injury which is now healing nicely. I have a brooder ready on my patio as when I had chicks here in the house my asthma was really bad. If I continue to do this hatching thing I will probably put something in my basement and see if that affects my asthma, The Auracana eggs that sat in the post office over memorial day are in the second incubator I was loaned, They are due to hatch on Tuesday. I also had 3 sizzle eggs in with them as I had too many eggs for my incubator due to the extra eggs I was sent. I know those are hard to hatch from Cynthia as she hatched the two I have. I can't tell about them from Candeling. They all had veins and now they are darker and the air sacs look ok but I guess time will tell, Keep your fingers crossed. I told hubby even if fathers day was Sunday I'm not going anywhere. He is as interested in the eggs as I am so he said ok.

Ooooh, I am sooo excited for you, Sundance!!! I hope you get a great hatch, because what cool chicks you'll have!! I haven't heard of this market at the farm. South Weber is really quite close to me though, so I'd be willing to give it a look-see. Care to post the ad?

Sundance - Good luck with your hatch!

My leghorn brooder hen looks like she might go ok. She made me nervous the first day, but yesterday she had a baby sitting on her back. She has 12 chicks, 4 she hatched, and 8 incubator that I put under her after her first ones hatched. She got off eggs, so I removed them - and one talked to me! AACK! I candled, thought I saw movement, and put it in incubator. No progress yet.

Cynthia - This is your blue pullet ruling the roost! She's in with a bunch of babies, first put them in their place, but already mothering them. They were hesitant to explore the outside run, but they follow her right out. They don't have a real roost in that stall yet. Building one will be on my Saturday "to do". She's beautiful - and tame - and sweet - Thank you!

All your comments here are so positive and sweet, it was fun to meet you! I was torn between picking your brain for chicken expertise and getting to know more non-chicken about you. For those who have not met Cynthia, don't be fooled by her comments about being old. She has no gray, is not an empty-nester yet, and has the spirit of a five year old best buddy, take your hand and run and play! She is as delightful in person as she is here.

Need a name for this pretty girl...

I can vouch for the the spirit of a five year old. She and I ran around her back yard together when I saw her last. Of course, I do tend to bring out the child in people...
