Utah!

Thanks, Sasha! Let me know if you can get your hubby to let you get a pair of dewlaps. I may have a source that would be able to help you out with that.

Cynthia, Spirit is a grey dewlap toulouse goose. She hatched on May 12th with a slightly deformed left foot and a severely deformed right foot and rotated leg. Drs. Echols and Folland at Parrish Creek in Centerville have been doing corrective orthopedic castings on her right foot and so far we have had incredible improvement. Thanks for the nice compliment about my buff. Would you believe she is only 3 months old? Can't wait to see how chunky she will be when she is full sized.

Awww, Cynthia! What an awful week for you already

I hope it gets that much better for you before the week is out!

Iain, cute girls! I love Spirit. She looks so sweet.

Blu, so sorry to hear that more of those eggs didn't make it

I'm glad that at least five hatched out, though. It was good of you to watch those for Lisa while she's away.

It's raining outside!

blu, that is so sweet of you to do this for her. Those chicks are so cute, she will be very happy that she got a yellow egg to hatch!

Wendy, your hubby really does look like he's hot out there...you know, the sweaty hot kind of hot..

What time of day was this? Whew...
That's going to be some set up for some real lucky chickens!

Someone from Eden?

Yes, tell us, what kind of chickens do you have? If you are a chicken addict, this is the place to come and share your addiction, I promise, there will be no one, nope, not one soul who will try to stop your chicken addiction.

Iain, I haven't read all of the posts I'm sure, to have missed out on why your duck is crippled? Or wait. Is that a goose? Man, that buff is gorgeous!

Sasha! You are coming on Sunday then? Just tell me what time you will be here. I can be here.

I have been really sick. Now Sasha is thinking..what? Oh boy, it was bad. A summer cold. I was flat on my back yesterday..today, much better. It started Tues., but yesterday was the worst.
Then last night, as I was laying in bed trying to sleep, it sounded like a war zone out there. I do believe there were more fireworks let off this year than last year in our neighborhood. How can people afford those two second burst in the air shows? I can't see spending that kind of money on those things, when I could be spending it on eggs to hatch out! Good grief.

Oh yes, I guess I wanted to forget this part..none of my showgirls made it. :(
I am sooo sorry about the show girls. I am a bit nervous about my eggs but I didn't even have time to candle them before I left. The incubator has a built in Alarm and I told the house sitter when it went off to put 1/2 cup water in. Best I could do. Still waiting for the plane to take us to the arcti circle delayed because of rain.

Oh, that's too bad that Lisa's hatch didn't do better. At least she did get one of the yellow eggs. Let's cross our fingers that it's a pullet!

Sundance! Hope your vacation is going amazing. I can't wait to see pictures. I'd like to see the North Pole. Tell Santa hi for me.

Cynthia, I'm sorry you've been so sick with your cold. Sounds like you're starting to mend, hope you feel all better soon. I'm so sorry none of your showgirls made it. Were they already hatched? Ugh, how awful.

IainUtah, cute geese. WIth the crippled one, is it correctable? I noticed you had her foot taped. Ah, I see my question was answered. That's great that you're seeing such amazing improvement.

It's not raining here, oh wait. It is. I didn't want it to start just yet because they were harvesting alfalfa across the street, and I wanted them to get all the bales on the truck before it started. It's awfully close though, they're about 80% done loading the bales.

I did feel bad for my poor dh- it was so, so hot yesterday, but he was going to scout camp today and wanted to at least get the enclosure done before he left. We took apart our composter because it hadn't been working well, and it was where I wanted my enclosure to be. Found a whole bunch of snakes, which provided great entertainment for the kids. I eventually made them put all the snakes in the garden for natural pest control.

Sounds like the whole state is getting rain! Yaay.

Wendy, no, my showgirls didn't even pip. When I went in to see, they were fully developed, but had sooo much water? What's up with that? I do the low incubation humidity, and the lower lock down humidity. Old school for humidity is out for me, so why all that water? One little one's beak was so close to breaking through the first membrane, but soo much water. And I have to come to know, pip those eggs if they haven't pipped the night before they are due to hatch. Wish I had done that in the day instead at night. They had such nice high vaults. Would have been very pretty.

Great pictures Iain! Your little grey looks so sweet. I used to have a Toulouse and I am particularly fond of that breed. I am so glad that you are helping her.

I used to have a Toulouse goose named Pate and I really loved her. Because she was an only goose, and was probably confused as to what she was, when it came time for her to start laying eggs she took my female golden retriever Lacy for a mate. Lacy wasn't ready for that kind of committment and just wanted to be friends but Pate was just certain that they were made for each other and layed eggs so that they could start a family. The trouble was, when it came time for her to get off the eggs and go eat and stretch her legs she just couldn't convince Lacy to sit on them for her. She would go get the dog and lead her back to the nest over and over but Lacy just wouldn't get the point and sit on it. She was happy to follow her but she just didn't understand this new and somewhat pointless game that the goose was determined to play.
Eventually I had to move and couldn't take her with me so I gave her to a friend who had a male goose who had lost his mate and was lonely. I thought it would be the perfect home for her, and it was, just not in the way I expected. When she got there the male was thrilled. He spent a lot of time trying to woo her and convince her that he was the man for her but alas, it was not in the cards. She had decided early on in life that 4 legged animals made the perfect mates and in her quest to replace Lacy the dog she spotted my friend's goat (Louie) who appeared to be currently unattached and without a wife. They hit it off splendidly and soon were spending all of their time together. They would take long walks and every they day would go down the dirt road to visit the neighbor dogs. When they got there she honk at them through the fence and then she and the goat would turn around walk home together. They were very happy and eventually decided to start a family. Unfortunately, Louie turned out to be about as good of a father as my golden retriever and would not sit on the nest either. They never were able to have children but she loved him anyway.

As weird as it sounds, that really did happen. I guess she imprinted on the dog and never was right after that. Great goose though
