Utah!

Lisa, so sorry. I remember you telling us about her..isn't she the one on your husbands head too? She was a smart bird. I think I just mentioned on here that I would like a nice barred rock in my flock this summer.
I am worried about my Miss Piggy. She laid today, but she still looks awful. She eats fine, she drinks fine. I am like you, she is the one that I want to keep as my forever chicken through a lot of years. I hope she can just make it through this winter. I told my DH yesterday, I'm not sure she will. She is puffed up a lot of the time, but man, we are going to be getting down to 11 degrees next week. I always worry when I don't see her right away when I go out. I just think, hope she's in the nest box, laying. Bless your heart. Glad it happened fast for her. So sorry. :( What a fun bird she was!

That Wheaten from you is a great layer already. Love her color of egg! And a nice smooth one too. Now, for that olive egg. LOL, not going to happen with what I chicks I am waiting on. That black one I have outside watching, has a nice thick comb now. Not real tall, but that thickness worries me.

My blue girl is a girl..pretty sure..my 5th generation from my very first blue.
I have that lavender Orpington, getting very pretty. Still going to sell her to the first one that speaks up. :)

Ha, Red, good luck on finding out who's laying that white egg..I'm waiting to see too!

Ah, Cynthia. How thou dost love to torture me with chicks

I hope that lav Orp finds a good home. I know my buff has been a character. I'm going to have to see if I can get my hands on a SQ black Orp, at some point. I hope Miss Piggy is okay. I really have to wonder if she doesn't have something going on internally.

Lisa, so sorry to hear that cute little Violet has passed

I loved that you were training her to ring a bell. It's always the ones that we want to keep forever that go, isn't it? That's how it was with my white Leghorn. I loved, loved, loved her, and of course she was one of the first victims of that swearword raccoon.

Got another little white egg. Anyone want to take bets on who it is? It could either be Flekka, my Icelandic, who is wonderfully red in the face, or Chelsea, my Exchquer Leghorn, who's been hot pink for a while but never RED red. Both are plenty old enough to lay (at least 6 months, I believe) Both get crazy if they're stuck in the preserve and want to escape to the bushes. And both have had access to the layer suite and the coop when I have found these eggs. I've got one in the coop and one in the suite, now. The truth will be revealed!

Oh, and the eggs are progressively getting a bit larger each time I find one. Still smaller than my BO's eggs, but undoubtedly gaining in length.

Oh Lisa I am so sorry about violet, Seems like its the ones we really like that go and break our heart, My chickens really don't like the snow, I went out to the palace yesterday and opened the front door. My friend was with me she wanted to see the eggs gathered, She loves the fresh eggs I give her and wanted to meet the hens, usually when I open the door they run out like a herd of mustangs, Yesterday then ran to the door, saw the snow and stopped. Not having any part of it. pretty funny because the ones in the front were being pushed by the ones in the back. a couple were pushed out and jumped back in the coop like ewww don,t let me get that white stuff on my feet. my little dog that has the broken leg hurt it badly yesterday. Hes on pain meds today and tomorrow we'll see if he rebroke it for the 4th time, If its broken it will get pinned in Orem on Tuesday by the orthopedic surgeon I am just sik about it.

Aw man. Sundance, I'm sorry about your doggie

Poor guy has had more than his share of leg problems. I hope he can get it healed soon. That is funny about your chickens, though. Half of mine are like that. If there's snow, they don't want any part of it. My BO will leave the run when it's snowy because she gets sick of being stuck in there with the crowd, I think. My leghorn and RIR will walk around just to pick through the snow. The Wyandottes are disgusted by snow, though. Too funny to me, seeing as how they are a "cold weather breed". My blue Am is the same way. Those breeds might be cold temp tolerant, but that doesn't mean they like it!

Oh dear, I know how hard you have worked to save this leg of his. Poor baby. Good luck on Tuesday!! Hope this does the trick. It sounds like it's pretty weak, and pins just might do the trick to help hold that babies leg up good and strong. Waiting for good news.

Well, just had a gentleman and two of his kids come and pick up one of my roosters. One of the BR's I got from Lisa a while ago was long overdue to be placed in a new home. Put him on KSL yesterday and now he's gone. It sounded like they had a few hens they might put him with, so that's reassuring. One down.

OH, Lisa!! So sorry about Violet!! I know you really loved her!! And sorry Sundance about your dog and Cynthia I hope your Miss Piggy does ok, too!!

MAdchicken... you have to have a barred hen to make sexlinks withe black/red cross anyway... the barring is then passed to only the roos.. they get the white spot on the head and the hens are all black so your RIR/Dominique cross should yield sexlinks, but the RIR/Australorp will not... there is a really good thread on sexlinks here on BYC that explains it really well, fascinating stuff!! Now for red sexlinks, you have to have a Red roo over a predominantly silver hen.. RIR over Delaware for example, maybe even your RIR over Cotton.. haha.. not sure about that one if the colors don't breed true but anyway.. I should have that sexlink thread marked... let me see if I can find it and post the link... I know I have seen people say they have blue sexlinks, and that is when you put a blue roo over a barred hen... so the roos will have the white spot and the hens will be all black or all blue...

Here's the link...https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/261208/sex-linked-information

Ok, since Lisa will probably be checking the ID thread... I'll go ahead and admit it... I set eggs for the New Years Day Hatchalong, haha!! I set some of my own, which should be either EEs or OEs.. ( I even set some of the bantam cochin eggs which are in with the Amer cockerels, so should have bantam EE's, and a few shipped eggs, to practice setting the ones that are shipped.... The gal I got them from just had me pay the price of shipping, she has a delaware flock...

It sure is cold!! For the most part the birds seem to be ok, but we lost one hen to the cold at my mom's already... an RIR, I was surprised because they're supposed to be cold hardy... but with this second cold snap we had, she just didn't tolerate it, poor girl....

I have another new layer at my house!! And she lays a pretty dark egg?? Have to figure out who is laying it, because it is big already and a pretty darker brown color... not Marans dark, but dark... I can't believe it's the other Delaware, her sister lays a pretty light egg, sometimes with spots... so I'm puzzled, thats for sure!

I have roosters coming out of my ears. If anyone else calls send them my way

Yay!!!

Sundance, did you say you were coming down this way on Tues? Here is a picture of the boy ... for sure! Guess who crowed, for a good 15 min. this morning? Ha, he thinks he's all that, as young as he is, He is the one that now goes for my big black boots..he just fluffs up, looks down at them, kind of spreads his wings, but backs up while I am walking towards him. He has that crow down pretty good now for a beginner.
Did you still want him back. I got some good pictures of him today.

Here is a picture of my little sweet pea..she always stretches her
neck out to look up at you, and she was really curious about this
camera. Never have had a chicken this nosey/curious. I love her.
She's the Faverolle, bantam.

Sundance, I need to get him placed if you aren't wanting him
Let me know. :)
