Utah!

Well i cleaned the boys up. They both look OK i guess. Rusty's comb didn't get torn. But poor ratchet. He is bald on top. Have you ever seen a bald Silkie? He looks like has excepted the Jewish faith, now all he needs is a little kippah to put on his head.

Tomorrow is Cotton's big day. I hope the eggs are still good. she is so funny, when we look in the coop at her she doesn't growl or fluff up at all, she just does the chicken pancake. I cant wait to breed her with Ratchet, how long is it before they start to lay eggs again? Does anyone know?

They egg laying depends on the hen. most will not lay if they have babies with them. My black silkie is broody all the time. When I let her raise a few chicks she will lay again at 4 weeks but she dow not go breedy until the chicks are about 6 weeks old. My other silkie goes broody once a year. I'll bet cotton has beautiful babies, I set some Americana eggs, some mixed barnyard eggs and some surprise eggs today. I'll let you guys know how I do. The rooster has been gone a week or so. I will have to see how they do. I can just imagine you poor plucked rooster. I'll ber Whit can make him a yamika. She makes Santa hats. I went out today and let the chickens out into the big yard today. It was pretty funny watching them in the snow. some refused to go out. The naked neck went into the deep snow and got stuck. After I pulled her she flew up to the top of fence and walked all over the fence. She then flew back in the coop. I could just hear her saying that white stuff is baaad.

Sorry about not posting pictures yet. It's has been crazy around here. So you know how I was complaining about my new incubator well it has hatched me out 11 chicks! One has wry neck though so I have been working at trying to help it. Poor thing.
Has anyone dealt with this before? I just gave it this solution of stuff

I sure hope it helps! It is breaking my heart.

Welcome, UtahFalcon!! You're just going to love having chickens; it's so fun. My first set of chicks came from a feed store, and I had a great experience with them. One of my best layers now is a speckled sussex that was an impulse buy when I went to pick up feed. You'll get some more interesting breeds if you buy from other chicken keepers, but they probably won't be sexed, which is sometimes a dealbreaker. I know that technically you are only supposed to have 6 hens in Draper unless you're on an agricultural lot. I doubt you could get away with a rooster, but I suspect there's several people in this group who are in cities with similar laws who have more than 6. A lot of it will depend on if you have neighbors who you are feuding with. If you are on good terms with all of your neighbors, odds are extremely good that you'll never get "caught" having more than the limit of hens.

MadChicken, is today hatch day? I'm so excited! I've only had one chicken ever go broody, and she was a terrible layer who got killed by a racoon about 6 weeks after her chicks hatched, so she never did lay again. However, I owned her over a year, and only got a dozen or so eggs out of her, so she's not a good example to use.

Bird-Man, any idea how to train my chickens how to catch mice? Mine have always acted like they don't exist.

I just went out to check on the chickens and put them away for the night and one of cottons eggs has hatched. From what i could see it looks just like the black one that hatched last week. I think its from the Australorp, and i was hoping for some little sex links. Oh well they are still cute. Im pretty sure a RIR/Australorp will make for a great layer. Well at least the hens

I hope the other hatches tonight. I will have to get some pictures in a few days. i dont want to upset the new mama to much.

madchicken so happy for your hatch! Do you have your broody hen out in your coop? One of my Silkies went broody again and I have some eggs still to hatch in 8 days. I was thinking of putting some under her but I am so worried about the cold night and day temps. Do you have a heat light for them?

Sundancen when my eggs came they were really cold too! They came from Arkansas. They are the ones to hatch in 8 days. so far I have 10 looking good.

Welcome Utahfalcon!
