Utah!

Hattie, did you candle your eggs when they went into lockdown? I hope you have a great hatch.

SpeckledHills, it's nice to see you!

Sundancen, how did you lose a silkie? Was it one of the babies? You are so funny to yell like that.

My frizzle was outside again tonight. This time, instead of carrying her over to the man door and putting her in, I put her in the hen house through the chicken door. Hopefully she gets the idea soon.

The naked neck I have did the same thing. She would put herself to bed on the fence rain or shine. I would go out every night and put her in the coop. Now shes the coop chicken. I don't know why the silkie died. Yes she was one of the older chicks, in the coop inside the coop she was just dead.

Lisa I think Saturday will be ok.  I'll talk to you later in the week

Thanks Sundance! But I saw a post from Cynthia--Cynthia are you really changing your mind? We have a possible chicken train worked out...and yours is not chest bumping, it may be really be a girl! I am pretty sad to hear you are losing chickens, that is awful! My polish is hanging in there, I made her a spot and lowered the heat lamp down a bit, she has been hanging out under there most of her time, and looks to be doing better. So far everybody else looks pretty normal, so crossing fingers they get through the next couple days.

Sphinx, it is lucky you found your girl and got her to her happy spot!

Red I know right? Chest bumping = bad news.

I'm sure Lisa, and it sounds like it will work out at a good time for Sundance. Diana, didn't you say you wanted it if I didn't? Sorry for you loss, I know this weather is causing so much loss. Now you can have that cute showgirl. I'm glad you are getting her.

I just want to concentrate on my girls now. I wish this yucky air would clear up too. Hard to breath out there!

I have a pip! It's still exciting. My RIR's are on the way. It's a small pip, so probably won't see anything until tomorrow. They are due on Tues. These are pullet sized eggs, so not surprised at an early pip, I have expected it because of their size. :))

Oh my gosh, Diana. You make me laugh

And I am sooo glad that you are doing better! I've been worried about you. Sorry you lost a Silkie. Okay, no one is allowed to lose any more chickens to the cold, ya hear? How are we supposed to carry through on threats for roostering each other if they all die out?

Madchicken, try putting some olive oil on your rooster's comb to help prevent frostbite. Both my Icelandic boys have had a touch of frostbite, too. I think it's because of how humid that little coop gets with everyone in there, despite the ventilation. Ever since I started putting them in the garage overnight with a light on for warmth, it's started to clear up. The one has a huge comb, too, so I'm really glad that they're doing alright.

Good luck! Sending good thoughts your way.

I missed someone, dangit. Senior moments will be the death of me, I just know it.

I wonder if I'm going to have to get an apron for my BO. Her boyfriend has done a good job of breaking a lot of the feathers on her saddle area (them boys can't keep their hands offa her, no matter the breed!), and I'm worried that it's affected her ability to stay insulated. She hasn't lost any more feathers for the last little while, but she sure looks scruffy. Poor Peachie.

Sundance so glad you are doing better. I laughed at your story.

Sphinx I did candle before lockdown. I had five eggs that looked great. Five with air sacs down the sides but the were still alive so I don't know if they will hatch. I have two pips. We shall see. I really want some of these little eggs. Just one female at least PLEASE.

Yay! Cynthia you are an awesome hatcher. I have never had early pips. Mine like to wait until I think they are all dead.

Hi Speckled! Long time no hear..or see. :) I have been giving my girls extra protein for sure. Plus, this morning, I put some Acidophiles on the eggs, because they are getting some Denagard. Getting some yogurt tomorrow. They love it.
Do you still have your blog? Are your chickens doing well now?
You can get probiotic supplements for cheap at Winco? I'm so going. This weather is horrible. It is supposed to get better by next Thurs. Let's hope!!

Cynthia, I'm glad you've got good stuff going into your girls. I'm sure that's been helping! Chickens can be such fragile birds to keep. I'm sorry for your loss recently.
It is black oil sunflower seeds that you can get in Winco Foods' cheaply. I'm not sure the best place to trust for probiotics, though I recently saw online that you can get supplements with more than 5 types of probiotics in them. I may have to try one for me, &/or the chickens if it seems safe.
My chickens are reasonably stable. I gave them a good dosing with Denagard (THANK YOU AGAIN) along with Aureomycin shortly after getting it from you & it helped. The chickens seem content & comfortable most of the time, I'm glad to see. Though they are NOT liking this cold weather!
I have not added a lot on PoultryPedia.com in recent months, but the content that is there seems to be helping a lot of people -- The site has had 3,000 to 4,000 unique visitors per month recently!

I'm glad.

Sphinx, I wish I could have been of better help in your chick's case. My initial intuition was that it wasn't a situation I should try to help with, but I didn't heed that feeling. I only mainly had pass-along info for that condition & wasn't very helpful, I'm afraid. (I've posted a request on the Poultry Podiatry page for others to share their experience with treating a Slipped Tendon, & hope to offer increasingly helpful information over time on the site.) Your own experiments from observations or counsel from someone with firsthand experience in Perosis would probably have been best. I'm very sorry I contributed to more anguish!!! I hope you will forgive me.
I was very glad to see you post a note a while later that your learning with Hulksmash had helped you save another chick's life.

That is awesome!!!

Oh, don't feel at all guilty. Having you try to help me with that chick was wonderful. My biggest regret was that I'd used the rubber bands. I think that was where I went the most wrong, and if memory serves, you were the one to tell me not to and got me taping its' leg properly. I don't think she had a slipped tendon- I think it was an old fashioned splayed leg.

Anyway, yeah. In May, I did back to back hatches at the elementary school school. Another teacher was doing a hatch that was a couple days behind my first. One morning, I was in the classroom, oohing over my chicks, and I could hear this increasingly louder chirping sound. The other teacher had a two day old leghorn with a splayed leg. I wrapped it up (and I was very good at it by then!) and it took about a week of being hobbled, but he made a full recovery and went to live on someone's farm. Not sure if they eventually ate him or not (I suspect they did). The teacher wrote me this very heartfelt thank you note at the end of the year because I saved her class the trauma of a "broken" chick.

Cynthia, any chicks yet? I'm wondering if I can buy denagard at all of the local feed stores or if I *HAVE* to order it online. Can't wait to see your babies.

My poor legbar's comb is a mess. I think he and the marans are trying to decide who is the head roo. Every time I get his comb cleaned up, he's back at it again. His comb is SO huge too, that seems to contribute.

In happy news, this morning my friend posted a picture of a bunch of chicks that hatched for his son's science experiment. he got half the eggs from me and half from my neighbor. I'm dying for details. I can see at least two or three legbar eggs that were pipped, but i don't see any obvious legbar babies. Which means either they hadn't hatched yet, or the marans was the daddy.

I woke up to two babies this morning, and one is working pretty good at getting out, and another is pipped. Pretty little red babies. :)

Shpinx..sorry, you can only order it online. If you want some now, I have about a 4th of a bottle left, you can order some, and come get some to last a few days until yours comes. I put two tbls. in a gallon for two days, third day I go down to 1 tbls. I'm on the third day. I will give it to them for another day I think. They sure don't like it! I put a lot, a lot, of sugar in it, they still don't like. Don't blame them, it stinks! Strong smell of meds.

Yaay Speckeld, glad your chickens are doing better. We all know how they don't like that cold! Can't wait until Thurs..that's when all the promises have been made for a warmer..and clearer, day.

My leghorn mix is mean! She is pulling the feathers, not just chasing them off, but grabs hold of feathers and pulls. She especially doesn't like my Australorp. She is the one that cusses me every time I go into the coop and she's on the nest box. What a brat. She lays almost every single day! Nice mint green eggs. She better straighten up. If she keeps picking on the pullets, I don't know what I'm going to do. The go run inside the coop until she is done eating. Out they come when it's time for her to lay. At least they can eat then. I may have to put her somewhere else for a while. hmm, nursery is empty. Maybe she'll be a good girl with some time out for a couple of days. I have a heat lamp in there, and she can lay in there too. I just thought of what to do. lol....

Ha, I have another baby out. One pipped, hope the other two pip. I want a couple of girls for sure. My early summer egg layers. :)

So, did I know that RIR's can have stripes??? NO! I wrote to the guy I got the eggs from. He was great to write back real quick. He says they are pure! That usually the ones with the stripes mean girls! He even wrote back and sent me a link..that was here on BYC about sexing RIR's! I had no idea! The only ones I've gotten have not had the stripes, but I think that I have only bought a couple from Cal Ranch or some place like that twice in the years I've had chickens. I have four with stripes, two without..and the two without..are walking tall! They are up there struttin their stuff like a little roo already! Too funny.
Here are a few of the pics I took to send to the guy I bought the eggs from, because I thought they were mixed. I feel bad for bothering him now. :/
All 6 of my babies that went into lock down are out and doing well. Those eggs were small..I have boots on two of them. Probably will be fine by tomorrow.

WOW! Those are nice looking chicks, Dont you just love the deep red color. I have had a couple RIR chicks and if i remember the hens did have a strip. and the roo's didn't. the roo's belly feathers (fluff) was also much lighter then the hens. her is one of my hens at a couple weeks but you can still see the stripes.
What kind of incubator are you using? I plan on getting one so i can do the whole egg order thing. It looks like so much fun.
