Utah!

Big HELLO to everyone!!! I'm back!!!

So much to tell. My re-homing of the flock turned into a nightmare of the greatest proportions, but which brought my babies back home and safe!!

Those 'wonderful, caring' people who offered to buy the entire breeding program flocks turned out to be newbie cock fighters.... a chicken owner (lovers) worst nightmare!!!

They were all returned, finally, with the poor hens looking as if they hadn't been fed or watered the entire time (2 were so weak they couldn't walk and I lost one later that night!!)

The roos were obviously getting prepared for razor spurs, but their feathers will grow back. Luckily, it was discovered BEFORE anything actually occurred!! WHEW!!

The husband has realized they are my babies, not just a hobby or business. When I was the one who mentioned divorce, he back pedaled, and even mentioned where we could find some white peafowl to go with my India Blues!!

More runs are going up to accommodate more poultry!!

Oh, happy day!!!

Whew, glad you got some things straightened out there! Not just the chickens, but with the family situation. I am thinking that your hubby got the wake up call he needed. Too bad the D word had to be brought up. Hopefully he keeps his eyes open to your emotions and can see when you are in need of his back up when things go wrong with the kids. I have a mixed family. I remember my DH having to tell the kids to back off in the beginning. Teens. A lot of them. I won't say it was easy. But, I will say it was worth it now. We all get along, and they have told me a number of times that they are glad I came along when I did. They are married with their own now, and they are so good to me .. and dad of course. I love them, and their children. They are mine. :)

I feel the same way about my "stepkids". They were raunchy as teens lol but now they are grown, and I will love them til the end of time :)

Desert, I hope you stepdaughter learns to appreciate you and Daddy respects your position in the family.

And, welcome to our thread, the nicest people around. :) What kind of chickens do you have? Are you in a neighborhood? On a large piece of land? We need to know! We like to buy, exchange, and see photos, and, tease each other, and, buy eggs, and, trade eggs, and, well, you get the picture! Come on in, and tell all!
We live in a neighborhood on a 1/4 acre lot. Syracuse allows only 6 chickens and, can you believe it, roosters. We won't be keeping roosters, though. After much consideration, we decided on a mixed flock of buff orpingtonbarred and barred rocks. Temperment, egg laying an looks we're the deciding factors. Being the green minded family that we are, we recycled our old rabbit hutch into our new hen house. The enclosed run is 6 x 12, with an outside fenced garden area that they will range in that is 15 x 80. Here are some pics:

they are looking a lot like my pigeons right now

I put 36 Australorp eggs in 13 days ago.  I have tossed 8.  So, 28 very viable Australorps. Anyone want another Australorp?
Arivis??   LOL..how are your chickens laying?  My Australorp is on the ball!  She lays almost every day.  Love her sweet face.  I call her Sissy.

Ooh <3 I want an Australorp but have no room for another chick. Maybe sell my leghorn later and get a tame juvenile. But for now, my mom would kill me xD Too many chickens.

WKWARD MOMENT OF THE DAY

soooo I went to lunch with my neighbor friend. The conversation turns to chickens. She tells me how cute my chickens are. Then this:

"i am sooo glad you do not have roosters, I hate the neighbors that do that, they are so rude! I had a neighbor with a rooster once after I had surgery and that thing would wake me up every morning at 5 am and I just wanted to bawl. I could never live like that again, I HATED those people, they were so inconsiderate. You are such a good neighbor, I love our neighborhood, I hope I don't EVER have to live by people like that again."

The look on my face  NO I did not tell her about my boy out there. Obviously she has not heard him yet....now I feel really dirty and mean lol I have a feeling I might have to decide between a good friend and a sweet little roo in the making....

People don't understand. My rooster, Zaphod, is a real sweetheart. He isn't always friendly but has never hurt anyone, and usually doesn't fuss when being held. He'll walk up to me and eat out of my hand. I can understand why people don't like them but crowing isn't rude, it's instinct. Mine barely crows at all, but Brahmas are a quiet breed after all. That's just my opinion. Being autistic, to me it makes more sense than some things people do.

This is why both my Icee boys get locked up in the garage every night, then let out in the afternoons when everyone has had plenty of time to sleep

I know how irritating a dumb rooster that won't stop crowing can be.

So I've been looking ALL OVER THE PLACE for somewhere to buy duckfood and my only option is ordering it online from Mazuri with the cost coming out to be $1 per lb after I include shipping. Should I still order it or is there some cheaper way, maybe through some bulk sales or something?
I don't have a lot of money right now, I've even had to tap into my roadtrip funds so I won't be going to chickenstock this year. Against my better judgement I tried giving them what my feedstore sold me instead, some of the chicken scratch, and they've stopped laying all together!
On top of that I've lost the little black chick with a poofy head and my word count for my novel is low for my goal. This has been a frustrating month! Can anyone help me out with getting a better deal on the duck food please? I don't know what to do. :(

I use regular scratch grains and layer feeds for my ducks and they thrive. Set up a cricket or mealworm system and raise your own to add nice proteins and treats for your birds.
Forget formulated foods, you pay way more than is reasonable for that stuff.
