Utah!

Cute pictures madchicken. :) Always love the mama...momo and baby pictures. That's a pretty nice Silkie right there.

Wish I had room for an Australorp... X3

Casa, both of the offers sound great, though I do love Paint Silkies... X3 Around the time yours are hatching I'm expecting my six chickens to be old enough to move outside. Will be 7 weeks old on the 11th of May. I don't have another place to put chicks, at least not at my house. But I am going to be prepared to keep any Brahma/Brahma crosses I don't sell. But I don't intend to work with or keep them at all, if driven to it I will just give them away.

So, during Poultry Judging practice today, I brought my hens for past egg production, two teammates brought eggs to judge, and mine laid an egg while they were there. We used the eggs for both exterior egg quality, interior egg quality, and judging the content on the egg. Was quite surprised with mine, my adviser and my teammates said it was fertilized. (Full size please, our adviser flipped the egg over on purpose hoping we would miss it.)
We were told that were it not for the blood spot, it would be a perfect egg. *shrug*

I for one was surprised it was fertilized and didn't expect that result. So, I am collecting eggs now for hatching... Not sure how fertile they will be if at all, but we'll see... Maybe they were wrong and it's just a bloodspot. But I'm giving it a try anyways.

Though, I did just realize, that doesn't work too well, considering I have to leave on Monday and won't get back until Wednesday afternoon... Oh well, maybe I can ask my family. xD But yeah, I will begin breeding shortly. My only problem is turning them four times a day until I've collected all I'm going to put in the incubator... I have school...

Going to wait until middle-late June to Early July to try for the Brahma/Silkie Crosses... By that time I probably would have sold all my Brahmas I ordered from Ideal besides Sahara and Lilifey. Kalahari I'm selling now, and Mozart I'll be selling once I'm done breeding her. Right now I'm focusing on my Brahmas... Don't know the mother of each chick for obvious reasons. Brahmas aren't too popular for less egg laying ability and their slow growth despite their calm personality, that's the main reason I worry...

A member of my Poultry team also wants to use my male to breed her Gold-Laced Wyandotte and one of her Sex-Links so that will be taken into account as well. Of the Silkies I raise as babies this year, I think I'll end up keeping one cockerel if I happen to end up with one, again for breeding. That's regardless of where I get them... I still want a Silkie Cock as soon as possible so I can use him when the time comes. Since I only plan to use him for a short time, borrowing one might work too. Though I highly doubt that will happen, no one in my chapter seems to have one at all.

Some of the chicks I'm raising now I'd like to breed at some point. Sunny, my Leghorn, I'm only keeping for breeding, will be selling her after I do so. One other, not sure which one right now. Might not do the second at all if something goes wrong this year. I don't know, so many people don't seem to be having much success, don't want to get my hopes up despite my excitement, you know?

Neh, I feel like such an idiot every time I post here. lD *hides*

Pan..the blood spot doesn't mean anything. You will see blood spots in store eggs. You want to look for that bullseye. I will try and find a picture for ya! :)

Can you see the ring around the white spot?

Posting a couple so you can get a pretty good idea...this one above..fertile!

This one shows it real well. :) Bullseye!

Pan, you are not an idiot. It's a learning experience for us all

That's wonderful that you may be collecting eggs! Here, I'll supplement what Cynthia has put up with a picture of one of my own fertilized eggs. Mind you, it's a little dryer than one fresh out of the shell, as I was cooking it for breakfast.

Welcome, Woodmeister! You're in a pretty area. I love all of the old trees up that way.

Donna, I have to wonder if some of those meaties that get bred are kind of dumb, to begin with. My BF had several a few years ago that literally ate themselves to death. He told me he found them with food still in their mouths. Kind of sad, really.

My last two possibly-good Icee eggs in the incubator are toast. I checked them today, and there's nothing going on but a dark cloud that drifts when I turn the egg. So, that stupid bator is getting cleaned out and packed up, then stuffed into the dark recesses of my closet. Sphinx, if your generous offer to try some of my Icee eggs in your bator still stands, I would be very interested to try that. I'm separating my girls into their own pen tonight. Their eggs are probably already good to go, but I want to guarantee that none of the offspring are sired by my mom's BR.

My black Wyandotte has decided she no longer wants to be broody, after only three days. Que face-palming icon, please. I find it mildly bemusing that of the girls I've had go broody thus far, my turkey is the one that means serious business. She guards her eggs like an angry snake, and today when one of the chickens tried to pick a fight with her while she was up off the nest, she gave her the smackdown. I wish I lived a lot closer to Birdguy. I would love some fertile turkey eggs to put under her.

Well, seeing as how there's a break in the rain, I'm off to set up my greenhouse in the preserve. And possibly work on a second pen that's been half-finished all winter. Wish me luck! Hope everyone has an excellent rest of the day.

Wow red, that is a big one! Great picture.

Pan better not feel like an idiot, or I'm going to feel like an idiot for posting those pictures and making her feel like an idiot. Pan! You little stink, you are doing great..it's called..learning experiences! :)

A couple of pictures that our son sent home today.

His bike. His cheeks look more chubby. :D

Ooo, so serious..doing missionary stuff as he put it. He said they had to go buy some
sun screen, they were burning.

These are the apts. they are staying in. Nice..

P-Day, district missionaries. Wish Austin was in the picture, he's taking it. They get
to drive a car quite often. At least lately.

I'm just going to see how it goes. Thanks guys, I'm new at this. Wondering if I should scrap the eggs I have, crack one open and look, or just try them and see. Either way, can't even consider incubating until Thursday... Won't be keeping any chicks that are hatched, as they will be purely non-show quality Brahmas, more interested in hybirds, call me crazy LOL

Alright, decided that I do want to try for Silkie Chicks. But, I was planning on waiting until summer to do that. Going to have some Red Star/Brahma mixes that I'll be trying to raise. Mothered by my friends' hens. During the summer too I'll be breeding some Splash Silkie rooster I can hopefully find somewhere...

Selling a few of my chickens as soon as I can. One of my Buff Brahma hens, maybe my White Leghorn Pullet if I don't decide to use her for a cross, and later this year I may be selling one or one of my other Brahma hens, as well as another once I'm done breeding her, depending on the feed cost. Besides my beloved roo Zaphod, the Silkie roosters I keep will only be used for certain crosses, so I won't have them long... Could ask to just use one temporarily or something. Might have to get a job to accomplish this project. xD As long as my parents are happy, we're good lol

Excited for everything going on! ^.^

Gorgeous new babies!

Welcome to the newbies.

Pancake, it's all about learning. You're learning the difference between a fertile and non fertile egg well before I did.

Cynthia, your son looks like he's doing well and having a great time. I bet that makes you happy to see.
