Pan..the blood spot doesn't mean anything. You will see blood spots in store eggs. You want to look for that bullseye. I will try and find a picture for ya!Wish I had room for an Australorp... X3
Casa, both of the offers sound great, though I do love Paint Silkies... X3 Around the time yours are hatching I'm expecting my six chickens to be old enough to move outside. Will be 7 weeks old on the 11th of May. I don't have another place to put chicks, at least not at my house. But I am going to be prepared to keep any Brahma/Brahma crosses I don't sell. But I don't intend to work with or keep them at all, if driven to it I will just give them away.
So, during Poultry Judging practice today, I brought my hens for past egg production, two teammates brought eggs to judge, and mine laid an egg while they were there. We used the eggs for both exterior egg quality, interior egg quality, and judging the content on the egg. Was quite surprised with mine, my adviser and my teammates said it was fertilized. (Full size please, our adviser flipped the egg over on purpose hoping we would miss it.)
We were told that were it not for the blood spot, it would be a perfect egg. *shrug*
I for one was surprised it was fertilized and didn't expect that result. So, I am collecting eggs now for hatching... Not sure how fertile they will be if at all, but we'll see... Maybe they were wrong and it's just a bloodspot. But I'm giving it a try anyways.
Though, I did just realize, that doesn't work too well, considering I have to leave on Monday and won't get back until Wednesday afternoon... Oh well, maybe I can ask my family. xD But yeah, I will begin breeding shortly. My only problem is turning them four times a day until I've collected all I'm going to put in the incubator... I have school...
Going to wait until middle-late June to Early July to try for the Brahma/Silkie Crosses... By that time I probably would have sold all my Brahmas I ordered from Ideal besides Sahara and Lilifey. Kalahari I'm selling now, and Mozart I'll be selling once I'm done breeding her. Right now I'm focusing on my Brahmas... Don't know the mother of each chick for obvious reasons. Brahmas aren't too popular for less egg laying ability and their slow growth despite their calm personality, that's the main reason I worry...
A member of my Poultry team also wants to use my male to breed her Gold-Laced Wyandotte and one of her Sex-Links so that will be taken into account as well. Of the Silkies I raise as babies this year, I think I'll end up keeping one cockerel if I happen to end up with one, again for breeding. That's regardless of where I get them... I still want a Silkie Cock as soon as possible so I can use him when the time comes. Since I only plan to use him for a short time, borrowing one might work too. Though I highly doubt that will happen, no one in my chapter seems to have one at all.
Some of the chicks I'm raising now I'd like to breed at some point. Sunny, my Leghorn, I'm only keeping for breeding, will be selling her after I do so. One other, not sure which one right now. Might not do the second at all if something goes wrong this year. I don't know, so many people don't seem to be having much success, don't want to get my hopes up despite my excitement, you know?
Neh, I feel like such an idiot every time I post here. lD *hides*
