Utah!

Ok I am just popping in from over on the Idaho thread to see if anyone would be interested in a 5 month old Cuckoo Maran Rooster? La Casa de Pollo said that she could bring it back from Chicken Stock for whoever would like him. If it helps he is free

. I got him for free when he was 2 months old so I don't feel right asking anything for him. He also just barely started crowing (he has only been crowing for about a week.

Pancake, i think it was you looking for a Silkie rooster. There is a black one in Riverton for free and a few in Vernal for $5.00. The ones in Vernal are better for breeding stock. The top rooster in the pictures lookes really good, its the one they show by himself. OH YA, its on ksl.......

Sun dance, the hen and chicks are doing great. They love fresh grass and dandelions. She still wont go up into the coop and sleeps outside in her bucket. It looks like one chick is a frizzle but the other 3 are still mystery chicks. I cant wait to see how they turn out. The kids are wondering if you named the hen or if we need to give her a name instead of little red bantam hen.

When you are typing, over there on your right - - - - - - ->>
There are some emoticons you can cilck on to add. Or if you have your own on your computer, you can add them like you upload a photo. The picture of the photo above the typing area...looks like a sunset? click on that, then "upload" then it will take you to browse on your computer. Then you can add your own like this

Hope that makes sense~~!

Lisa, for some reason I became mesmerized by this melancholy dancing bird and just stared at it for like 7 minutes........it has been one of those days. You know it's time for bed when an animated dancing chicken can easily suck your soul through a laptop screen!

Ah. Had a rough night. But cuddling a chicken makes everything better! My babies love me no matter what! And that, ladies and gentleman, is why I keep chickens. Eggs are great but... Well... I guess it's sad when someone says their best friends are chickens, but for me, mine come pretty close. :3

After two days of watering with a eye dropper every couple hours and trying really heard to get them to eat, tonight i got home and spent a few minutes with the dropper and got them to drink from the water dish. now it looks like a meeting taking place at the water cooler. ( i use a quail water dish so they don't fall in and drown. ) The food is still a hit and miss. I tap the feeder and they will come and peck at the food. They seem to have more fun pecking at the food on each others beak. I found some chick feed that had weevils beetles in it and thought it might be fun for them to find the beetle's in a week or so after getting their footing. it will be like a prize in the cracker jacks box you can eat.

WOW, I really need to check this thread everyday so I don;t have so many QUOTES...lol!!!
I have one each of EE, BO, RIR, White Leghorn, Golden Campine, Silver Laced Wyandotte. 5 weeks and 2 weeks old already.
Nice mix....
Does anyone know where oxine might be locally?

If you DO find out, let me know! i bought some on Amazon, it was $25 plus quite a bit for handling, 10 or 15? Too much.
I just ordered some through my vet.... they have the Inactivated Oxine that you can use directly in a mist on your poultry; the other is to be used away from the poultry (didn't know if you knew... I didn't before I researched it)>
I was taking out the garbage at my daughters condo and a magpie flew over head with a baby duck cheeping in its mouth, I threw the bag at it and it dropped the baby, It hit the soft lawn. Wasn't hurt that I could tell, I picked it up started walking in the same direction it flew from as the condo had several ponds. A couple of ponds later I found moma. I set the baby on the edge of the bank. Momma came and collected it. Don't know if any of those 10 babies momma had survived but I did my part
Oh, poor baby!!!! So glad you saved it.
Meh, I rather like magpies, what with their tuxedos and all. Fairly intelligent birds, too, though not as much as crows and ravens. They don't have magpies back east-- I missed them when I lived in New England. Used to be legal to shoot down hawks and falcons, too, back in the day. Ranchers would sit out during migration season and shoot them down in droves. Then they hit the endangered list, and one isn't supposed to do this anymore. I learned a serious respect for raptors when I was a falconer and, I guess by extension, an appreciation for a lot of birds as well as natural predation. In any case, any bird that has the class to wear a tuxedo I'll give a nod of respect to.

I'm kinda Wierd that way. Maybe my kids come by it naturally!
Myself, I have to admit I've befriended a magpie and nicknamed him Mic. The year before last he had a wife and babies out in the far Cottonwood tree. He didn;t bother anyone and he and his family would sit on the horses backs and snooze. Last year his family had disappeared but he was back, following me around and carrying on like we were having a full conversation. He's back again this year.... no wife or family!! He doesn't bother anything and our old German Shepherd shares her dog food with him. Think they have an agreement...lol.
Hi all,
I'm brand new to BYC and to keeping chickens. My daughter and I brought home 4 chickies from IFA last Friday. I've tossed around the idea of getting chickens for about two years and finally just jumped in. It helps that my cute daughter persuaded me to do it sooner than later (she is 21 - so I really should be over her "persuasiveness"). I don't have a coop yet, and am looking at KSL classifieds to see if I can find a decent one. IFA had one that I glanced at briefly. Does anyone know if the quality of their coops will hold up through the harsh weather we have here? Or can someone recommend where I can purchase a coop for four hens?

Also, I'm not sure where to locate the coop and run. I'm leaning towards having the coop situated on the north side of the garage and then have the run open to a south-eastern exposure. I feel like keeping the coop shaded from the hot southern and west sun will be more beneficial to the birds in the long run. My hubby is afraid that will be too cold for them in the winter.

My husband wants me to raise meat birds. My problem is, I much prefer boneless, skinless breasts. So, there's a bit of a problem there, lol.

I think the one legbar that's hatched is a girl. So excited! I'm torn. On one hand, I want more to hatch NOW because I'm impatient. On the other hand, it'd be cooler for the first graders to watch it happen live. So they SHOULD wait til tomorrow morning.
Hi Sphinx!! Maybe some day they will come up with boneless, skinless meat chickens...lol. What a scary thought...yikes!!! Hope the lab genetics specialists leave that one alone!!!
Ugh! My Japanese got squashed last night and I lost her

I thought about bringing her in last night due to the cold snap and her small size...but she seemed great at bedtime so I decided not to. Looks like some of the juveniles piled into one of the nests to snuggle last night and she was on the bottom. Oh man she is just flat. I feel so bad for her. She is so much tinier than the juveniles, even though she is almost 3 months old, and they are 6 through 8 weeks. Poor baby! It just broke my heart when I went out to check on them this morning and saw her like that

OH LISA, so very sorry......

Dang... I did the same thing!!! Couldn't take my eyes off it.... truly I must be tired!!!

Oh my gosh. Candled my eggs. Looks like I have 10/13 chicks developing! I know I shouldn't get my hopes up, but... I feel happy for my first time. :3 Eager to see baby Brahmas! ^^ Gonna double check...
