Utah!

So my RIR laid in her box. I thought I would be fighting tooth and nail with her on it But after all the Ivy went yesterday, she walked around all yesterday and this morning complaining about it. I kept putting her in the nest box with her egg, and she kept jumping in and out and running back to the spot with the Ivy, also moved a mold in the spot so she can't get in there. Finally around noon she just went in and laid in the box. She was a wreck all morning long, extremely noisy, and kept running back to the side yard and then back to her box. But she finally went in and came out quiet. Went and checked and another small egg.

On a side note, my little baby girl starts all day Kindergarten tomorrow.

She will be gone from 8:10-3:00 every day. So very excited, an I'm sure the chickens will be partying in the coop because she literally is out there bugging them all day long.

Madchicken, those are some gorgeous RIR. I'm sure someone will be very lucky to have them.

Silly, congrats on your baby starting kindergarten. I'm jealous you get full day! My baby starts first grade Monday. SOOOOOO excited to have my school days freed up for work and such.

Sundance, we need to set up a playdate. My broody is sooooooo over her babies, and I need to get your pullets back to you. Your ameraucana is going to be so beautiful, but she seems much darker than a lavender- looks more of a charcoal color.

Tonight I moved my exbroody mama and her babies out of the leper colony coop, and moved my Shirley and her eggs out there. I figure she needs some peace and quiet for the final few days of incubation, and then safety for the chicks that hatch. I candled tonight, and have 5 wriggling chicks. Had to toss one egg. I'm going to go out and check on her again in a little bit to make sure the move didn't freak her out.

SO.... seems my whistle blowing in March of this year, when I joined BYC, about the disease problem Privett Hatchery was wrestling with wasn't an isolated incident for them.

For those who read my Welcome To BYC thread start- 'New to BYC...eye worm, etc" naming Privett Hatchery as the perpetrator and my battle with IFA and even Cal Ranch for carrying them again this 2013 year, against the odds that they were actually healthy, so soon after their outbreak of Eye Worm infected chicks, it has happened again.

August 19, 2013 a report was released from the State of New Mexico that a Salmonella outbreak has occurred with Privett Hatchery being named as ground zero. Please read the link below and get informed!!

How do people get Salmonella infections from live baby poultry?

Live poultry may have Salmonella germs in their droppings and on their bodies (feathers, feet, and beaks) even when they appear healthy and clean. The germs can also get on cages, coops, hay, plants, and soil in the area where the birds live and roam. Additionally, the germs can be found on the hands, shoes, and clothing of those who handle the birds or work or play where they live and roam.
How do people get infected?

People become infected with Salmonella when they put their hands or other things that have been in contact with feces in or around their mouth. Young children are especially at risk for illness because their immune systems are still developing and because they are more likely than others to put their fingers or other items into their mouths. It is important to wash hands immediately after touching poultry or anything in the area where they live and roam, because the germs on your hands can easily spread to other people or things.

This year I refused to purchase ANY chicks from a store which brought them in from Privett...... so very glad I did. That is one less thing I need to worry about!!! Whew!! (Then again there were those rescues...dang... no good deed goes unpunished!!!)

My bantam Silkie is very broody. She also fluffs up and screeches. The sound reminds me of predator, haha. Luckily, she's very friendly just puts on a big display.
